Goal

What is the preferred setting for Fibre Channel on the drive? 8GB or auto negotiate?

Solution

It depends on the Fibre Channel switch or the HBA that the drive is connected to.

If connecting the 8 Gb drives to a 2 Gb or 4 Gb Fibre Channel switch or HBA, it is recommended forcing the ports on the FC switch or HBA to 2 or 4 Gb.

This information is valid for IBM and HP LTO 5 and 6 drives.

If you experience connection issues with the LTO5/6 drives on a 16Gb or 8Gb FC switch, the ports on the switch should be forced to a negotiation speed of 8Gb.
