Goal

A video procedure on how to replace a Sun StorageTek SL500 Library System RLE card.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
   WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: training in SL500
   TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
   TASK COMPLEXITY: 2 

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
   PROBLEM OVERVIEW: RLE replacement required.
   WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: SL500 library must be offline to the operating system and software application.  Library will need to be powered off.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Refer to Oracle/StorageTek SL500 Replaceable Parts Catalog, PN96120, for detailed instructions on removal/replacement of RLC Card Assembly. It will provide the Pictures, Notes and Cautions for proper replacement.

Refer to the attached video for further instructions on Removal / Replacement of the RLE card.

RLE Card SL500 is located behind the power supply bays at the rear of the DEM, the power supplies and drives must be removed.

Remove RLE Card

1. Read the Safety and ESD instructions in the “Personal Safety” and “Product Precautions” sections.

*At the Front of the Library *

2. Park the Robot by pressing “Open Door button on the keypad and wait until the robot is parked before proceeding.

3. Remove power from the library by toggling the main power switch to OFF position.

*At the back of the library *

4. Remove the power supplies.
- Unplug the power supply chord.
- Remove the four T15 screws attaching the bracket to the chassis and frame.
- Slide power supply out of chassis using the handle.

5. Remove the drives.
FC:
- Disconnect the FC cable from the right side of drive tray.
- Loosen the spring-loaded screw on the right side of the drive tray until it is disengaged.
- Slide the drive/tray assembly out of the drive bay and set it securely on a table or cart.

SCSI:
- Disconnect SCSI cable(s)from the right side of the drive tray.
- Remove the SCSI terminator.
- Loosen the spring-loaded screw on the right side of the drive tray until it is disengaged.
- Slide the drive/tray assembly out of the drive bay and set it securely on a table or cart.

6. If a drive and/or power supply vacancy plate is installed, remove it.

*At the front of the library *

7. Unlock and open the front door.

8. Remove any customer cartridges installed in the right rear column arrays inside the DEM.

9. Starting at the top, remove the arrays from that column.

10. Carefully disconnect the CAP-RLM switch cable from J110E on the back of the RLE card in order to not cause any damage to the connector.

11. For the cable connectors at the bottom (J114E) and the top (J135E) of the RLE card:
Reach into the power supply bay and press inward on the left locking tab while reaching into the drive bay and pressing inward on the right locking tab. Use a long thin long thin-bladed screwdriver for this.

12. Disconnect the cable from J135E at the top of the RLE card..

13. If the library has a module installed below the DEM:
- Disconnect the cable from J114E at the bottom of the RLE card.

14. If the library has no module installed under the DEM:
- Remove the 7 T15 screws attaching the safety cover to the RLE card.

15. Lift the safety cover away from the RLE card and slide the cover out of the opening along the left side of the drive tower.

16. Remove the remaining 3 screws attaching the RLE card to the back wall.

17. Slide the RLE card through the opening along the left wall of drive tower.

Replace the RLE card

1. Carefully slide the RLE card through the opening along the left side of the drive tower.

2. Align the mounting holes on the RLE card with the standoffs on the back wall.

3. Loosely install a screw in the mounting hole to the right of the top power supply connectors.

4. Adjust the alignement of the holes to the standoffs and install a screw on each side of the bottom power supply connectors.

5. Be sure the mounting holes are aligned with the standoffs.

6. Tighten the three screws.

7. Slide the Safety cover through the opening.

8. Position the cover over the RLE card ensuring its mounting holes align with the standoffs.

9. Install and tighten all the mounting screws. Do not over tighten the screws.

10. Connect the expansion cable to J135E at the top of the RLE card.

11. Connect the cable to J114E at the bottom of the RLE card.

12. Install the power supplies and power cords.

13. Install vacancy plates if present.

14. Starting with the top drive bay, install each drive/tray assembly into a drive bay and connect the drive cables. Be careful of preventing the front of the bezel and the drive catching on the roof or floor of the drive opening.

15. Install vacancy plates if present.

* From the front of the library *

16. Connect the CAP-RLM switch cable to the J110E on the back of the RLE card.

17. Starting at the bottom, install the rear column of arrays to the right side wall of the drive expansion module.

18. Install all customer cartridges that you previously removed.

19. Close and lock the library front door.

20. Power-on the library by toggling the main power switch to ON.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
   WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Power the SL500 back up.  Bring library and drives back online to the OS and Software Application.
