Goal

The following document provides instructions on recognizing and properly diagnosing a System Battery failure on SPARC T3/T4/T5 Systems

Solution

The voltage of the server's real-time-clock backup battery is dropping. This is a normal behaviour and requires that the 3V Lithium Coin Cell Battery,
which is located on the system board (or mainboard) of the server, gets replaced.

In addition to illuminating the service required LED, the server will show the following symptoms:

a) In the Service Processor ILOM command line interface:

-> show faulty

Fault class : fault.chassis.battery.fail

FRU : /SYS/MB/BAT
(Part Number: unknown)
(Serial Number: unknown)

Description : The real-time-clock backup battery is approaching the end of
its lifetime.

Response : The chassis-wide service required LED will be illuminated.

Impact : ILOM and/or Host time of day may not be retained when power
is lost.

Action : The administrator should review the ILOM event log for
additional information pertaining to this diagnosis. Please
refer to the Details section of the Knowledge Article for
additional information.

Corrective Action

1. Collect either an ILOM snapshot (How To) or at least the output of the ILOM "->show faulty" command.

2. open a Service Request and provide the Service Engineer with the ILOM snapshot or ILOM output.
The Service Engineer will request that the dispatch ships a replacement battery to you.

Hint: Please keep in mind that this battery is a customer replaceable unit.

3. familiarize yourself with the battery replacement procedure.
The "References" section contains links to server specific replacement procedures.
