Goal

Changing the addressing scheme of T10000x and 9x40 from Soft to Hard addressing to support Arbitrated Loop physical addressing (ALPA).

Solution

Certain applications and device configurations (specifically Arbitrated loop (ALPA)) require drives to be predefined with a specific physical address (known as 'Hard' addressing).  This is not the default for T10000 or 9x40 which normally, in an interface fabric context, have their addresses automatically assigned in ascending order on loop initialisation. Drives shipped from manufacturing are preset to accept this (SOFT PA HI).

Should hard addressing be required please use either of the following methods. It is strongly advised to follow the guidance set out in the relevent documentation for each of these methods) :-

Using the Virtual Operator Panel Software (VOP) with the drive offline :-

Select the 'Configure' Menu (or CNTL+C)

Select 'Drive Data' (or CNTL+D) to show the 'Configure Drive Parameters' dialog.

Select the 'Hard Assigned Physical address' for the correct Interface Pa or Pb (Port A or Port B) to 'Yes'

Change the Arbitrated loop Physical Address as desired.

Press the 'Configure' button or (ALT+C). n.b.This will IPL the drive.

Full VOP usage details are given in the Storagetek VOP User's Guide E37053-01. VOP is downloadable from MOS.

Using the 9x40 drive operator panel with the drive offline:-

With the menu at '   *'

Press Select

Select the correct port and disable it.

Select 'Chng CFG?

Keep Pressing 'Menu' until 'CFG prtx' is displayed. Press Select

Select 'Hard PA Y'

Set 'PA=xx ,yyy' by pressing the select button

Once set, keep pressing Menu until 'Save/IPL?' is displayed.

Drive will IPL.

For full details see the 9x40 Service Reference Manual P/N 95740 (restricted)

T10000x  drive menus are operated in the same manner to 9x40 with minor differences.

Full details in the Storagetek T10000 Service Manual  P/N 96175 (restricted)

N.B. Neither SL3000 nor SL8500 support Hard ALPA physical addressing and will force the drive back into Soft addressing mode (Hard Addr = No, loop addr 125)
