Goal

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - Sun x86 Systems

 This document will guide you on how to run hardware diagnostics on Sun/Oracle X86 Systems.

Solution

Before beginning:

If you have not already done so:

Update your system's firmware to the latest version available. Up to date firmware often provides enhanced performance and diagnostics capabilities.

Start a Java Remote Redirection Console (JRKVM) Session (ILOM 3.0.x -Launch the Oracle ILOM Remote Console , ILOM 3.1.x - Launching and Using the Oracle ILOM Remote Console )

Open a connection to the ILOM's WebGUI (Open a web browser, type in the ILOM's IP address or hostname, login as a user with administrator privileges)

Open a connection to the ILOM CLI (via either serial or SSH)

This will provide you with multiple ways to both control and monitor the system.

SP, ELOM & ILOM 1.X and 2.X

These earlier firmwares do NOT have built in diagnostics available. Where possible, Oracle strongly suggest upgrading your firmware to 3.0.6.x if it's available, then use the built in diagnostics. Otherwise, you must use the appropriate System Diagnostics CD/DVD or OracleVTS (see the appropriate sections below.)

ILOM PC-Check (ILOM 3.0.6.x and newer)

ILOM 3.0.x : Configure Pc-Check Diagnostics for x86 Systems
ILOM 3.1.x : Enable x86 Diagnostics to Run at Boot (Web)

TO RUN DIAGNOSTICS FROM THE WEBGUI

Login to the WebGUI via your web browser.

(Note that ILOM has rendering issues with certain versions of Firefox. If information does not appear as expected, use another web browser.)
Note your ILOM version on the system information tab. ILOM Pc-Check diagnostics are included in ILOM 3.0.6.x and newer only. If your ILOM is below this, you can either upgrade the ILOM to a newer version if one is available, or use the System's Tools&Drivers or Diagnostics CD/DVD instead. Another option is to use OracleVTS (see below)
If ILOM 3.0.6.x or newer is not available for your system then you will NOT be able to run Pc-Check Diagnostics via ILOM! you must use The System Diagnostics CD (if one is available) or OracleVTS instead.

ILOM 3.0.x
1) "Remote Control" tab -> "Diagnostics" sub-tab ->
2) In the "Run Diagnostics on Boot:" Dropdown select one :

Disabled - If you do not want to run PC-CHECK diagnostics on next boot
Enabled - Run's basic tests. takes approximately 5 minutes to complete
Extended - Runs extended tests. takes approximately 20-40 minutes to complete
Manual - Select this if you want to choose what tests to run. (refer to the appropriate diagnostics guide above for specific options)

ILOM 3.1.x&3.2.x
"Host Management" -> "Host Control" -> select "Diagnostic Partition" from the dropdown,

NOTE * Certain tests, such as Ethernet or FC-AL, require appropriate loopback adapters be installed on the interfaces you wish to test.

Click Save for your settings to take effect. On next boot, the system will automatically boot to the PC-Check diagnostics.
To start diagnostics, the host must be fully POWERED OFF and back on. PC-Check and UEFIdiag may not run if the host power is warm reset.
         (See Managing Remote Host Power States, BIOS Boot Device, and Host Server Console  for ILOM 3.0.x, or Controlling Host Power to Server or Blade System Chassis for ILOM   3.1.x)

TO RUN DIAGNOSTICS FROM THE CLI

ILOM 3.0.X : Configure and Run Pc-Check Diagnostics (CLI)
ILOM 3.1.X : Enable x86 Diagnostics to Run at Boot (CLI)
ILOM 3.1.X : Run UEFI Diagnostics Using the Oracle ILOM CLI

1)Login to the ILOM's CLI via network or serial
2)Type the following commands to enable diagnostics on next boot:
   ILOM 3.0.x/3.1.x  ->set /HOST/diag state=[disabled|enabled|extended|manual]
   X4-4 w/ILOM 3.2 ->set /HOST/diag mode=[disabled|enabled|extended|manual]

Disabled   - If you do not want to run Pc-Check diagnostics on next boot
Enabled    - Run's basic tests. takes approximately 5 minutes to complete
Extended  - Runs extended tests. takes approximately 20-40 minutes to complete
Manual     - Select this if you want to choose what tests to run.

-> set /HOST/diag state=enabled
Set 'state' to 'enabled'

->

If the command gives an error such as "no such target" try:

->cd /HOST
->show /HOST/diag
->set state=enabled

NOTE* Loopbacks are required to test Ethernet, FC-AL, IB HCA's etc.

The system MUST be powered off for Pc-Check to run on next boot. It will not run if you use a warm reset. Power off with "->stop /SYS", then power on with "->start /SYS"

If the host is currently hung/unresponsive try the command "->set /HOST generate_host_nmi=true" before powering off. If properly configured to do so, this will force the Host O/S to panic and produce a core file. (Note: It is highly unlikely that hangs can be diagnosed without a core dump.)

RESULTS
When Pc-Check diagnostics is finished, it will print the results on the VGA display. The results are also logged by the ILOM. Though they are not viewable in the ILOM WebGUI or CLI, the results are copied by the snapshot function. When diagnostics are completed, Please run and upload a new snapshot to Oracle for your Oracle Support Engineer to review.

System Diagnostics CD/DVD

Most, but not all, Sun/Oracle systems have a system specific bootable diagnostics CD/DVD available. It will contain either a version of the Pc-Check diagnostics utility, or an older version of the Sun/Oracle VTS (Validation Test Suite) software. The diagnostics image can be either burned to a CD, or mounted as a remote image in the ILOM Remote Console (Note: some older systems may not support booting from a remote image).

1)Login to MOS (https://support.oracle.com)
2)Go to the "Patches&Updates" Tab (if it is not visible, click the "More" button and locate it in the dropdown)
3)Click The "Product or Family (Advanced)" link
4)In the drop down box type the name of your system (Ex. Netra X4270 M2). The Field Will autocomplete and offer suggestions as you type.
5)In the "Select up to 10" dropdown, click the triangle to expand the selections, then checkmark whatever downloads are of interest to you. Usually This will be the most recent software version listed.
6)Click "Search", then download whatever updates you need.

Oracle VTS (Validation Test Suite)

KM DOC#1254435.1

Oracle VTS Documentation Index

Oracle VTS is as Solaris based testing suite. It is available as both Solaris packages (SPARC and X86 32-bit and 64-bit), and as a bootable CD image (X86 64-bit only). The image can either be burned to a CD or USB stick, or mounted as a remote image in the ILOM Redirection Console.

Please note that the Bootable CD image is Host O/S Independant. It can be used on any Oracle X86 system regardless of the Host O/S installed. No permanent changes are made to the installed Host O/S.
