When trying to boot iSCSI from the NAS appliance on a server, the iSCSI Target from NAS system is not showing in the BIOS of the server.

Goal

When we try to boot iSCSI from a NAS system, the iSCSI Target from NAS is not showing on the BIOS of the server.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - Disk Storage ZFS Storage Appliance Community

Solution

In the long run, this issue resides and should be addressed by BIOS iSCSI initiator implementation. A workaround has been created on the AK appliance to resolve it temporarily.

That temporary fix has been integrated into an Interim Diagnostic Relief (IDR) appliance firmware release.

If the iSCSI boot functionality is required, then a Service Request to Oracle NAS Support should be opened.

We will then provide the IDR - 2011.04.24.5.0,1-2.33.18.1 - to the customer which contains the fix for that issue.

To boot ISCSI from the NAS system, the procedure is as follows :

1. The procedure to create an ISCSI initiator and target is explained here:

iSCSI Target Configuration - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E22471_01/html/820-4167/configuration__san__iscsi.html

The target is to be created on the NAS system : the target IQN can be assigned to the default target group and the initiator access

via the default initiator group (that would leave the LUN open to public visibility).

A better solution is to create a specific target IQN for the boot environment and create a new initiator group containing the IQN of the adapter from the server.

2. To workaround the bug in the iSCSI boot layer from the NAS systems, we need to install the IDR on the NAS heads we want to boot from.

The IDR is 2011.04.24.5.0,1-2.33.18.1 and it can be installed by following the process in the following document:

1429544.1 - Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to install an IDR

3. Once the above target groups are setup, create a LUN and assign the target and initiator groups to them.

4. Then use the UEFI driver from the BIOS to set up the ISCSI target on the NAS head. The procedure is explained here :

Configuring iSCSI Virtual Drives - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E20881_01/html/E20896/sbxis.glzai.html#scrolltoc

All steps from 1 to 18 must be done. Note: Step 19 from the ISCSI boot procedure will not work unless the IDR has been installed on the NAS side.

5. Once the IDR is installed, we are able to see the LUN on the server. Select it and exit BIOS to boot from it.
