Goal

Premium features are bound to an ID, unique to a single array, called the Storage Array Feature Identifier (SAFE ID), also referred to as the Feature Enable Identifier (FEI). The FEI is stored in a private area called DACstore on all physical disks that contain array configuration metadata.

The FEI does not change under normal circumstances, but certain service actions may result in the generation of a new FEI. In such cases, it may be necessary to get new licenses as part of the recovery process.

Solution

Regenerate the license key file corresponding to the new FEI and Enable the Premium Features.

This can be done in two steps:

  1. Regenerate the License Key File:

    1. Go to URL – http://www.oracle.com/us/support/licensecodes/sun/fixline-dseries-premium-274781.html
    2. Access the license key generator.
    3. Select option "Generate Replacement Key".
    4. Enter the chassis serial number of the array.
    5. Enter NEW Feature Enable Identifier.
    6. A replacement key file is generated which should be saved as a local file.
  2. Enable the Premium Feature(s):

    1. In CAM, select Storage Array > Administration > Licensing.
    2. On right window pane, select the feature to be enabled > Add license.
    3. Browse and select the licence key file saved in step #6 above.
    4. Click on Enable.
    5. Check feature is enabled by revisiting the CAM licensing window.

Where to find the Chassis Serial Number and Feature Enable Identifier(SAFE ID)

  • Via Common Array Manager (CAM) Browser:

Select Storage Array > Administration > Click on Licensing. FEI and chassis serial number are displayed under "Licensable Feature Summary on Storage System"(right window pane).

  • Via Common Array Manager (CAM) CLI:

    sscs list -a <arrayname> license

    Where "sscs" is located under:

    Solaris: /opt/SUNWstkcam/bin/
    Linux: /opt/sun/cam/bin/
    Windows: C:\Program Files\Sun\Common Array Manager\bin

  • From storageArrayProfile.txt bundled with the array supportdata:

Please refer to <Document 1002514.1> Collecting Sun Storage Common Array Manager Support Data for Arrays.

    • Chassis serial number:
      1. Determine the TrayID that the controllers are in. (Usually 85, but not always).
      2. Unzip the supportdata file and open the file storageArrayProfile.txt.
      3. Locate the 'Drive/Controller Tray nn' section where 'nn' is the TrayID from step 1.
      4. The serial number of the array is located in the 'Overall Component information' in this section.

    • Feature enable identifier
      1. Locate SUMMARY section in storageArrayProfile.txt.
      2. Locate line starting 'Feature enable identifier:'
      3. The alphanumeric string following this is the FEI.
      4. Any lower case letters in the string need to be capitalised to be used in the key generator.

If the serial number of the array does not exist in the NetApp database, or if any other issues occur in enabling the Premium Features, please contact Oracle Support.

Depending upon the nature of the issue, an Oracle Support engineer may need to contact either NetApp or Oracle License support. Oracle License Support can be contacted via licensecodes_ww@oracle.com, but note that at the time of writing this document, the process to purchase new features for these array types is effectively EOL.
