FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: replace a faulty SPARC T5-8 Rear Chassis Subassembly

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The server must be fully shut down and the power cords disconnected.

ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat

CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove the rear chassis subassembly while the server is in the rack. You must remove the chassis to service the rear chassis subassembly.
DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, misaligned connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part just as the new part was packaged to avoid any damages during shipping.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:

Remove the Rear Chassis Subassembly

  1. Power down the server.
  2. Take the necessary ESD precautions.
  3. At the front of the server, remove all of these components:

Cables (front and rear)

Ensure that you label the cables

Processor Modules (top to bottom)

Main Module

Power Supplies

  1. At the rear of the server, remove all of these components.

Cables

Ensure that you label the cables

Fan Modules

PCIe carriers

Rear  I/O module

5.Determine your next step:

If you have another person to assist you, go to step 7

If you are alone, go to step 6

6. Place a mechanical lift under the chassis, and remove the screws that fasten it to the rack

7. Remove the chassis from the rack, and place it on an appropriate surface

8. Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the five screws that secure the rear chassis subassembly to the server chassis, and then, slide the rear chassis subassembly out and away from the chassis.

9.  Slide the rear chassis subassembly out and away from the chassis.

Install the Rear Chassis Subassembly

1.Slide the rear chassis subassembly into the server.

2.Using a Phillips screwdriver, tighten the five green screws to secure the rear chassis subassembly in the server.

3. Determine your next step:

If you have another person to assist you, go to step 5.

If you are alone, go to step 4.

4. Place the chassis on a mechanical lift.

5. Install the chassis into the rack, and secure the chassis with the four screws that were removed.

6.At the rear of the server, install these components.

Rear I/O module
