WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The server's fan modules support replacement while the server is running. However when replacing one of the fan modules from the back row the fan must be replaced within 30 seconds to maintain adequate airflow and properly cool the server to prevent overheating.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Prepare the server for service.
- Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
2. Confirm the fan module failure and it's location.
- Confirm which fan module is to be replaced. Each fan module has a status indicator (LED). If the LED is lit amber, the fan has failed. The status LEDs are located adjacent to each of the fan modules.
3. Remove the fan module
- Using your thumb and forefinger, grasp the handle on the fan module.
- Lift the fan module straight up and out of the chassis and set it aside on an antistatic mat. (Caution- When removing a fan module, do not rock it back and forth. Rocking the fan module can cause damage to the fan board connectors)
4. Install the replacement fan module
- Remove the replacement fan module from its packaging and place it on an antistatic mat.
- Install the replacement fan module into the server. (The fan modules are keyed to ensure that they are installed in the correct orientation)
- Press down on the fan module and apply firm pressure to fully seat the fan module.
- Verify that the fan status LED is no longer lit amber.
- Verify that the Top Fan LED on the front of the server and the Service Required LEDs on the front of the server are not lit.
5.Return the Server to operation
- Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
- Check all power and data cables to ensure that no connections were disturbed during the service.
- Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on and that system is operating properly.
