Applies to:

Exadata Database Machine X2-2 Hardware - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Connect an external usb drive to an exadata DB node and use it to transfer files to another machine.

Solution

As no definite policy on such a practice exists, take note of the following caveats whenever connecting USB storage media to the Exadata DB nodes:

1. There are no NTFS drivers loaded by default in the Exadata kernel and even if you do load them, the drive will be read only. Therefore, format the drive as ext2 or ext3 instead.
2. To avoid any issues with selected primary boot device, do not leave the drive plugged in through a boot cycle, instead removing it prior to rebooting the machine.
