Goal

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - Disk Storage ZFS Storage Appliance

Customer has lost root password of his appliance. He cannot login to it using BUI or CLI (SSH) but still has access to the SP console.

The goal of this document is to describe how to get 'root' access to the system again, without loosing the data on the storage (but accepting a considerable amount of downtime).

If a factory reset is necessary and a previous configuration backup was taken and can be restored, the network and data services settings can be kept.

Solution

In order to enter a new root password on a system where the root password is no longer known an Oracle TSC engineer can set the password to the factory default (changeme).

Some preparation can be done by the customer himself.  After step 2. of the procedure below TSC's assistance is required.

Suppose the system is a cluster consisting of head A and head B and root password of both heads is lost - the following procedure can be followed:

1) Shutdown head B from the SP, so the resources fail over to head A.

SP-B> stop /SYS

Check the head is down with:

SP-B> show /SYS
....
Power state = Off

2) The Oracle TSC Engineer can reset the password via shared shell (http://oracle.com/123) without destroying the configuration.

The shared shell must be opened to the ILOM of head A.

The following link is only accessible to Oracle TSC NAS Engineers :

See https://stbeehive.oracle.com/teamcollab/wiki/AmberRoadSupport:Recover+root+password+on+a+ZFS+Storage+Appliance+%28grub%29

3) Once head A is recovered it can be booted normally (as part of the procedure in step 2.

After successful login to head-A proceed to step 4.

4) Start head-B

SP-B> start /SYS

As part of the rejoin of the cluster head-B will receive the new password

Remarks

* A full description of the configuration backup/restore can be found in the online help at https://<ip-of-your-nas>:215/wiki/index.php/Maintenance:System:ConfigurationBackup

* Oracle might charge customers for the labour done when assisting them to reset system passwords, since it's customer's responsibility to keep their passwords stored in a safe (but yet accessible) place.
