ESD Caution:
  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are  extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.

Contamination Caution:

  • Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe
  • packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: Mx-32 Product Training/Experience

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

HOT replacement

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

Caution – Do not remove both service processors at the same time. The system will shut down.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

This activity can be performed as an active/hot replacement or as a cold replacement

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Removing the Service Processor

1. Use one of these Oracle ILOM commands to display faulty components:
   -> show faulty

2. Check the /SP/logs/event/list to determine which service processor failed and which service processor became active:
   -> show /SP/logs/event/list

3. If both service processors failed, stop the hosts:
   -> stop /System

4. Stop the service processor that has the  failed battery:
   -> stop /SYS/SPx

5. At the front of the server, find the faulty service processor.  Look for the blue Locate/Ready to Remove LED.

6. Use a grounding strap to protect the equipment from ESD damage.

7. Remove the faulty service processor:
   a. Squeeze the locks on the extraction levers.
   b. Swing the extraction levers into the horizontal position.
   c. Pull the service processor out of the slot.

8. Remove the cover from the service processor.
    Press the spring latches on the cover to unlock it, then slide it off.

9. Use a small flat screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry the battery out of the battery holder

10. To insert the new battery, press it straight down into the battery holder.
     The positive side of the battery faces up.

11. Install the cover.

Reinstall the Service Processor

12. Insert the service processor and push it into the slot until the extraction levers start to close.

13. Close the extraction levers fully until they lock into place.

14. Use Oracle ILOM to restart the service processor.
   --> start /SYS/SPx

15. If you stopped all the hosts restart them.
   --> start /System
