 Detailed steps to upgrade firmware for NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 Switches on Oracle Big Data Appliance

Solution

Note: The latest NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 switch version currently supported on the BDA is NM2 v2.2.8-2.
Upgrading to the 2.2.8-2 firmware requires first upgrading to the 2.2.7-2 firmware version. If you get the below error, the most probable cause is that the switch was not upgraded to 2.2.7-2 first:

ERROR: Image is not for this platform
Firmware image update failed.

The firmware for NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 is not managed by Oracle Big Data Appliance (BDA) software patching. If a NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 is replaced and the firmware of the replaced component is at a lower level than that shipped on the BDA as per "Firmware Upgrade Policy and Factory Ship Versions for Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 [ID 1528190.1]" it must be upgraded manually.  For example, on BDA V2.0.1, a replaced NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 would need to upgrade its firmware to V2.0.5-2 if it comes from the factory with a lower firmware version. The general sequence for upgrading the firmware, based on an example upgrading BDA V2.0.1 NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 firmware to V2.0.5-2 is below.

Other cases where the NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 Switch should be upgraded are:

  1. In a mixed InfiniBand fabric with other Engineered systems. In this case it may be necessary to upgrade the NM2-GW as advised by: Setting up the Subnet Manager in a multi-rack cabling configuration containing Exalogic/Big Data Appliance and Exadata/SuperCluster (Doc ID 1682501.1).
  2. If recommended to upgrade the switch by a BDA Upgrade Note or an Advisory Note such as, Recommended Kernel and Firmware Versions to Avoid Known Issues After Upgrade to BDA V4.7, BDA V4.8, BDA V4.9 (Doc ID 2296538.1).
  3. If advised to upgrade the switch by BDA Support to resolve a specific issue.

In all cases In cases where an upgrade is necessary, the recommendation is to upgrade all switches in the rack to the latest support NM2 firmware version as specified above unless otherwise advised.

All 3 NM2 InfiniBand switches in a BDA rack should be upgraded to the same version (but this should be done serially - one at a time). Use this note to upgrade the NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 spine switch and use How Should the Firmware for NM2-GW Sun Network QDR InfiniBand Gateway Switches Be Upgraded on Oracle Big Data Appliance? (Doc ID 1534255.1) to upgrade the two NM2-GW Sun Network QDR InfiniBand Gateway Switches .

To upgrade the switch:

1. Log into an ILOM CLI shell for the NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 as ilom-admin user and default password is welcome1.

2. Enter the following command to open the Fabric Manager shell:

-> show /SYS/Fabric_Mgmt

3. Verify the NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 firmware version by issuing:

->version

Example output showing the version is already at 2.0.5-2. In this case no firmware upgrade is needed:

FabMan@bda01sw-ib1->version
SUN DCS 36p version: 2.0.5-2
Build time: Nov 29 2011 15:54:47
SP board info:
Manufacturing Date: 2011.04.27
Serial Number: "NCD6L0062"
Hardware Revision: 0x0006
Firmware Revision: 0x0000
BIOS version: SUN0R100
BIOS date: 06/22/2010

4. If the firmware is at a lower version then download the patch to get the firmware upgraded to 2.0.5-2.

    a.  To find the patch in My Oracle Support click on the Patches and Updates tab.

    b.  The Patches and Downloads page is displayed.

    c.   In the Patch Search for Oracle....window, click the Advanced Search tab.

    d.   The Patch Search for Oracle... window updates.

    e.   In the Product drop-down menu, select Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36.

    f.    In the Release drop-down menu, select Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 x.y.z. Where x.y.z is the version number of the firmware package to be acquired. For example, 2.0.5.

    g.   Select Linux x86-64 for platform.

IB 36 patch search

    h.   Click Search.

    i.    The Patch Search window expands with the search results.

    j.    In the Patch Name column, click the respective patch number link. This should bring back the following patch for example:

IBPatch

    k.   See the installation instructions in "Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) 3.0 Supplement for the Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36" to apply the firmware patch.

 5. Once the firmware is upgraded log into an ILOM CLI shell for the NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 as ilom-admin user and default password is welcome1.

 6. Enter the following command to open the Fabric Manager shell:

-> show /SYS/Fabric_Mgmt

 7. Verify the NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 firmware version by issuing:

->version

Example output showing the version of the firmware was upgraded to 2.0.5-2:

FabMan@bda01sw-ib1->version
SUN DCS 36p version: 2.0.5-2
Build time: Nov 29 2011 15:54:47
SP board info:
Manufacturing Date: 2011.04.27
Serial Number: "NCD6L0062"
Hardware Revision: 0x0006
Firmware Revision: 0x0000
BIOS version: SUN0R100
BIOS date: 06/22/2010
