Goal

General Guidelines and Information for the SL8500 Power Supply Installation and AC Configuration.

PS Installation - Refresher - There are CSEs now building libraries that were not doing so a short time ago.  Also, there may be some experienced CSEs that have forgotten the rules for installing DC Power Supplies in the SL8500 and how AC is distributed.  A spreadsheet has been created to assist in keeping track of the PS installations.  It is attached for your reference.   Please review the information below as several recent events show there may be a need to do so.

Solution

Some General Guidelines and information for the SL8500 PS installation and AC configuration:

  • If 2N AC Power
    • Make sure the power connectors to the internal Ethernet switch (or AC transfer switch) go to the leftmost and rightmost connectors below the switch. The center connector is empty.
    • Accessory racks 2 & 4 are powered by PDU1 and racks 1 & 3 are powered by PDU2.  Cable power to the installed devices accordingly.
    • The SLConsole Op Panel is only connected to PDU1.
    • Powering off either PDU1 or PDU2 alone will not impact the SL8500, the internal switch or drives (except for the Op Panel and opposing accessory racks as noted above). This must be tested during installation!
    • There are 2 DC power supplies installed for every 8 transports of any kind (unlike the SL3000 that is transport specific)
    • 64 transports would require 16 DC power supplies. (2x8=16)
    • Always evenly distribute the Drive DC Power supplies between the AC1 and AC2 or AC2/N+1 drive power supply bays.
    • When configured as 2N power, the two AC2(N+1) Drive PS bays can be considered as any other 2N Drive PS bay.
    • There is 1 DC power supply installed for every H-Bots.
    • If configured with 4 H-Bots there are 4 Rail DC power supplies. (4x1=4)
    • If configured with 8 H-Bots there are 8 Rail DC power supplies. (8x1=8)
    • Always evenly distribute the Rail DC Power supplies between the AC1 and AC2 or AC2/N+1 Rail PS bays.
    • When configured as 2N power, the two AC2(N+1) Rail PS bays can be considered as any other 2N Rail PS bay.
    • A 4 H-Bot configuration will have supplies in 2 of the 4 Rail AC1 bays and supplies in 2 of the 4 Rail AC2 bays.
    • An 8 H-Bot configuration will have all 8 Rail power supply bays occupied.
    • In spite of different appearances or part numbers, Rail, Drive & HBZ DC power supplies are fully interchangeable.

  • If N+1 AC Power
    • Make sure the power connector(s) to the internal Ethernet switch go to the leftmost connector below the switch. If using the dual powered PUE card connect the second plug to the center connector.  The rightmost connector is empty.
    • Accessory racks 2 & 4 are powered by PDU1. No racks are permitted in positions 1 & 3 when using N+1 power.
    • The SLConsole Op Panel is only connected to PDU1.
    • Powering off PDU1 will totally shutdown the SL8500, all drives and both accessory racks.
    • There is 1 DC power supply installed for every 8 transports of any kind (unlike the SL3000 that is transport specific)
    • There is always 1 more DC supply added to the above requirement.
    • 64 transports would require 9 DC power supplies (8x1+1=9).
    • Install the Drive DC Power supplies into the AC1 drive power supply bays.
    • When installing more than 56 drives add the 9th power supply to a drive bay marked AC2(N+1)
    • There is 1 DC power supply installed for every 2 H-Bots.
    • There is always 1 more DC supply added to the above requirement.
    • If configured with 4 H-Bots there are 3 Rail DC power supplies. (4÷2+1=3)
    • If configured with 8 H-Bots there are 5 Rail DC power supplies. (8÷2+1=5)
    • Install the Rail DC Power supplies into the AC1 Rail power supply bays.
    • When configured for 8 H-Bots, add the 5th power supply to a Rail bay marked AC2(N+1)
    • A 4 H-Bot configuration will have supplies in 3 of the 4 AC1 Rail PS bays.
    • An 8 H-Bot configuration will have supplies in 4 of the 4 AC1 Rail PS bays and 1 supply in a AC2(N+1) Rail PS bay.
    • In spite of different appearances or part numbers, Rail, Drive & HBZ DC power supplies are fully interchangeable.

Please refer to specific power supply installation instructions in Chapter 9 of the SL8500 Installation Manual.
