DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: VSM6 trained, T4 server, Solaris 11
TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: How to repalce FC card in a VSM6 server.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Prepare affected VSM6 server for servicing:
Note: It is recommended that Host I/O is stopped and VTDs taken offline before beginning this procedure. Even though there are dual nodes, issues have been experienced that later releases will fix. This note will be removed once we know the release with fix.
-
Connect to server that requires maintenance.
-
Logon as vsmadm (default password = changeme!)
- Check for fenced components and identify FC card location
Refer to VSM6 Installation, Configuration and Service Guide.
- FC card may be shipped with shortwave transceiver. Before installing new card, swap shortwave with longwave from card being replaced.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:
FC Card Replacement Steps Overview
For complete details on replacing FC card, refer to the appropriate VSM6 Installation, Configuration and Service Guide.
NOTICE: As of May 10, 2016 NEW SSD replacement instructions are available here: http://morris.us.oracle.com/www/NPDC/microcode/vsm/vsm6/other/VSM6_Guide_FRU_Replacement_20150306/.
Use these newer instructions until the updated manual is published (at which time this notice should be removed from this document.
1. Check for fenced components and identify FC location.
2. Stop VSM resources, shut down node and set for maintenance.
Note - In image release 6.0.6 documentation, the -force optional parameter was used but in 6.0.7 documentation was removed.
Do not use the -force parameter unless instructed by TSC or engineering.
3. Enter the following command to place in maintenance mode and shutdown the VSM6 node.
# /opt/vsm/bin/vsm_cli_client -c "shutdown node -maint -node <1 or 2>"
where <1 or 2> is the number of the node affected, either a 1 or a 2 (no less/greater than signs).
4. The above command will gracefully shutdown the VSM6 processes and power off the node.
Do not power off the node while the server and processes are being shutdown otherwise unexpected consequences can occur.
5. Once the node is shutdown, pull the power cords and extend the server to maintenance position.
Note: Be careful when pulling out server, as cables in CMA may bind.
6. Replace FC card with longwave transceiver.
Note: Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
7. Power the system on. The node will boot into maintenance mode.
8. Clear FMA faults
9. Validate and unfence component(s)
10.Reboot the node into normal mode
# uadmin 2 1
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Check that the node came up correctly in cluster with command:
# /usr/cluster/bin/scstat -g
Have the customer vary the VSM6 and devices back online.
PARTS NOTE:
REFERENCE INFORMATION:
Refer to VSM6 Installation, Configuration and Service Guide.
