REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: replace a faulty SPARC T5-8 Server Fan Module

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat

 

 

NOTE: The server will continue to operate at full capacity with nine or more fan modules installed in the server. The server will not operate with fewer than nine fan modules installed and operating. If the server is operating with nine fan modules installed and one or more of those nine fan modules fails, the server will power down to keep from overheating. You can perform a hot-service on a fan module only if nine or more fan modules are operational.
DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc). If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the old part to avoid any damages during shipping.

 
WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:

A) Remove a Fan Module

The fan module is a hot-service component that can be replaced by a customer.

1. Locate the faulty fan module that you want to remove from the server. Check the following indicators:

See rear of Server for the locations of the fan modules.

Fan Module LED
System Service Required LEDs on the front panel and rear I/O module
Server Fan Fail LED on the front panel
If the fan fault causes an overtemperature condition to occur, the server Overtemp LED will turn on, and an error message will be logged and displayed on the system console.

2. Determine if you can remove the fan module with the server running or not.
Determine if you can remove a fan module with the server running or if you must shut down the server before removing a fan module.

NOTE - The server will continue to operate at full capacity with nine or more fan modules installed in the server. The server will not operate with fewer than nine fan modules installed and operating. If the server is operating with nine fan modules installed and one or more of those nine fan modules fails, the server will power down to keep from overheating. You can perform a hot-service on a fan module only if nine or more fan modules are operational.

- If you can remove a fan module with the server running, go to Step 3.

- If you cannot remove a fan module with the server running, remove power From the Server to power down the server before continuing.

3. Press down on the middle portion of the fan lever and lower the lever slightly to disengage the fan latch.

4. Lower the fan lever completely and pull out on the fan module to remove the fan module from the server.

B) Install a Fan Module

1. Insert the fan module into the empty fan module slot.

2. Lift the fan lever up completely until the latch clicks into place to completely seat the fan module into the slot.

3. Power on the server, if necessary.
If you had to power off the server before removing and installing a new fan, return the server to Operation to power on the server again.

4. Verify the fan module functionality.
a. Check the front or rear panel LEDs for the following indications:

Green System OK LED – illuminated

Amber System Fault LED – not illuminated

Amber System Fan Fault LED – not illuminated

Note : If you are replacing a fan module when the server is powered down, the LEDs might stay lit until power is restored to the server and the server can determine that the fan module is functioning properly.

b. Run the ILOM show faulty command to verify that the fault has been cleared.
If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, then the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Verify functionality, no service LEDs or messages
