REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:  Replace failed hard drive

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat

 

 

 

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.


T5-1B Server Module drives are hot-swappable, which means that you can remove them while the server is running. However, you must prepare the operating system on the server prior to removing the drives.

NOTE: Please be aware that Disks could be in hardware raid volumes. When replacing a failed drive in a hardware RAID volume, follow the T5-1B RAID Drive Replacement Strategies at: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35199_01/html/E35200/sisag.z400086d1535370.html#scrolltoc

Caution -- Possible data loss: If you insert a storage device that has been configured with a RAID volume into a server that did not previously have its storage devices configured with RAID volumes, the existing storage devices in the server will be converted to RAID volumes during automatic synchronization and any data on the existing storage devices in the server are erased.You should delete the active RAID volume from the storage device. For information on how to delete a RAID volume, use the appropriate RAID management utility for the RAID controller installed.

Address mapping between the Oracle Solaris OS device paths and physical hard drive slots is not fixed. For many storage administration tasks, the mapping of OS device names to physical hard drive slots must be determined before the task can be performed. See the SPARC T5 series servers administration guide for information on mapping SAS controller ports to physical drive slots.

Replace an Existing Hard Disk Drive (HDD).

1. Observe the LEDs on the front panel of the drive to verify which drive in the server is faulty.

- Green (operational) / amber (faulty disk ) / blue (HDD has been prepared for removal)

2. To remove the faulty drive from the server,

a. Press the release lever button on the drive front panel then tilt the lever into a fully opened position.

b. Hold the opened release lever and gently slide the drive toward you.

c. If you are not immediately replacing the drive, insert a filler panel into the empty drive slot on the server.

3. To install (or replace) the drive,

a. Slide the drive into the vacant slot by pressing the middle of the drive faceplate with your thumb or finger.

c. Using your thumb or finger, press on the middle of the drive faceplate until the release lever engages with the chassis.

d. Close the release lever until it clicks into place and is flush with the front of the server.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

For hot plug, configure the drive and verify drive availability.
Use appropriate software commands to re-activate/re-sync mirror if manual intervention is required.

Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid volume set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
