CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Mx-32 - How to Replace a Faulty Memory DIMM

ESD Caution:
  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are  extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.

Contamination Caution:

  • Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe
  • packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

Caution – The CMU is heavy. A fully-loaded CMU weighs 56 lbs, 25.5 kg.

Caution – Do not remove more than one CMU at a time. Fill the empty slot within two minutes, or the server might overheat and shut down.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: Mx-32 Product Training/Experience

TASK COMPLEXITY: 4

TIME ESTIMATE: 120 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

For a hot replacement the customer is required to perform a domain(s) shutdown

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Locate the DIMM using ILOM to display faulty components:

-> show faulty

 From this you should be able to identify;

The slot number of the DIMM,  the CMP which owns the faulty DIMM and the CMU where the DIMM and CMP are located

2. Power off the PDomain that has the CMU.

3. Remove the CMU.

Mx-32 How to Replace a Faulty CPU Memory Unit (CMU) (Doc ID 1529502.1)

4. Place the CMU on a static-safe work space.

5. Remove the CMU cover.

Loosen captive screws at the four corners of the CMU.

6. Press the DIMM Fault Remind button.

The slot for the faulty DIMM will light.

Note – The Fault Remind circuit is powered by an energy cell that powers the circuit for 60 minutes or less after the CMU is removed from a power source

7. Replace the DIMM.

8. If a DIMM slot LED is lighted, press the Fault Remind button to turn off the LED.

9. Install the CMU cover.

Tighten captive screws at the four corners of the CMU.

10. Install the CMU back into the platform

11. Restart the PDomain.

Note – The stocking location replacement DIMM may not include the Oracle part number if target properties are listed.  FRU DIMMs are sourced directly from memory vendors and are not programmed with the Oracle part number.  This is not a problem and will not cause any issues.

e.g.,
-> show /SYS/CMU3/CMP0/D0101 fru_part_number

/SYS/CMU3/CMP0/D0101
Properties:
fru_part_number = ,HMT84GR7AMR4A-H9            (the Oracle part number is missing before the comma)

12. Return the faulted component to Oracle.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
