Goal
Does the SL500 support mixing LTO and Mixed Media Modules in the same library?
Fix
A customer has a Base and 1 DEM for LTO only.
They want to remove the DEM and replace it with a Mixed Media DEM with two SDLT drives and two LTO drives.
There has been some confusion as to whether LTO only and Multi-Media modules can be mixed on the same SL500. There is documentation that states they should not be mixed.
The Installation Manual - seems clear don't mix LTO and MM DEM and CEM's .
But to clarify, are we saying don't mix any LTO Base or MM with the other type DEM and CEM.
Sales has sold a site to take out the existing LTO DEM and put in a MM DEM to a LTO Base.
There seems to be some wiggle room in that we don't specify Base and DEM and CEM and only get specific on expansion modules ?
LTO Library Cartridge Slots
Caution – Firmware problems: You can not mix LTO and mixed-media arrays and magazines within the same library. If you add expansion modules, the new modules must have the same type arrays as the existing modules.
“LTO Only Version” DEM's and CEM's cannot be mixed with ”Mixed Media Version” DEM's and CEM's.
Product Engineering stated it should work and the library is smart enough to figure it out but it has not been tested.
===========================================================
Local engineer did the installation as requested and found positive results supporting LTO only Base and Mixed Media Module with 2 types of drives working without issue.
The original configuration was, BASE plus one DEM, LTO Type.
They shut off power and opened the Front Door, removed the Cell arrays and installed the MM (Multi-Media) type Cell arrays to the DEM only. Then Removed the CAP Assembly and replaced it with the CAP unit from the MM DEM. Then replaced the Target Bar from the drive end with the same from the MM DEM. Then removed two LTO-3 Drives and replaced those with two SDLT-320 Drives. Then Powered On the SL500 with the Base Module configured for LTO type and the DEM configured for MM type.
The SL500 Booted up like normal. No Errors on any part.
Below is the configuration information from the library after the module change over.
