FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X3-2L (Sun Fire X4270 M3) Fan Module needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

The server's fan modules support replacement while the server is running. However to maintain adequate airflow to properly cool the server the top cover fan assembly door can only be left open for 60 seconds. Leaving the door open for more than 60 seconds, while the server is running, will cause the server to automatically shut down. Also note that if a fan module is not reinserted within approximately 30 seconds the system will detect a fan column fault and power off the server. Due to this restriction when performing a hot-swap fan replacement make sure the new fan module is ready for insertion before removing the failed unit so that the fan location is not left empty beyond this time limit.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:


Get the new part ready.

a. Obtain box that new part came in.

b. Open box, unwrap the part from any packing material, and lay the new part on an anti-static pad near the server that you are servicing.

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  2. To access the fan modules, open the top cover fan assembly door.

2. Confirm the fan module failure and it's location.

  1. Confirm which fan module is to be replaced. Each fan module has a fan status LED that is located next to the module. If the LED is amber, the fan has failed.
  2. If the service is to be performed while the system is up and running make sure that the fan assembly door is not left open for more than 60 seconds.

3. Remove the fan module

  1. Using your thumb and forefinger, loosen the captive screw that secures the faulty fan module in the chassis. If you cannot loosen the fan module screw with your fingers, you might need to use a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Grasp both the captive screw and the opposite end of the module and lift the fan module straight up and out of the chassis, and set it aside on an antistatic mat. (Caution- When removing a fan module, do not rock it back and forth. Rocking the fan module can cause damage to the motherboard connectors)

4. Install the replacement fan module

  1. With the top cover fan assembly door open, install the replacement fan module into the server. (The fan modules are keyed to ensure that they are installed in the correct orientation)
  2. Press down on the fan module and apply firm pressure to fully seat the fan module.
  3. Verify that the fan module status LED on the replacement fan module is lit green.
  4. Using your thumb and forefinger, tighten the captive screw to secure the fan module to the chassis.
  5. Close the top cover fan assembly door.
  6. Verify that the Top Fan LED on the front of the server and the Service Required LEDs on the front and rear of the server are extinguished.

5.Return the Server to operation

  1. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  2. Check all power and data cables to ensure that no connections were disturbed during the service.
  3. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on and that system is operating properly.
