DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

Time Estimate: 30 minutes

Task Complexity: 0

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: battery failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat

The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown. Then power down system and disconnect the power cords. A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

NOTE: The system battery is a cold-service component that can be replaced by a customer.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

Remove the System Battery

1. Slide the main module out of  the server.

2. Remove the cover from the main module and locate the system battery

3. Push the top edge of the battery against the spring and lift it out of the carrier.

Install the System Battery

1. Insert the new system battery in the main module, with the positive side (+) facing out.

2. Install the main module back into the server.

3. If the service processor is configured to synchronize with a network time server using the Network Time Protocol (NTP), the ILOM clock will be reset as soon as the server is powered on and connected to the network. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

4. If the service processor is not configured to use NTP, you must reset the ILOM clock using the ILOM CLI or the web interface. For instructions, see the Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) 3.0 Documentation Collection.

5. Return the server to operation:
a. Return the server to the normal rack position.
b. Reinstall the power cords to the power supplies. Do not power on the server until the SP clock has been set.

Using the Ilom CLI to set the date and time:

The following example sets the date to November 17, 2012, and the timezone to PDT.

-> set /SP/clock datetime=111716192012 timezone=PDT
Set ’datetime’ to ’111716192012’
Set ’timezone’ to ’PDT’

-> show -d properties /SP/clock
/SP/clock
Properties:
datetime = Fri NOV 17 16:19:56 2012
timezone = PDT (PDT)
usentpserver = (none)
Commands:
cd
set
show

Verify the System Battery

1. Run show /SYS/MB/BAT to check the status of the system battery. In the output, the /SYS/MB/BAT status should be OK, as in the following example.

-> show /SYS/MB/BAT
/SYS/MB/BAT

Targets:

Properties:
type = Battery
ipmi_name = MB/BAT
fault_state = OK
clear_fault_action = (none)

In the output, the /SYS/MB/BAT/ status should be OK

Power on the server.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:
Verify functionality, no service LEDs or messages.
