What is the Media Unmount Delay?
The delay can range from 0 to 1800 seconds. (Default is 180 seconds). If you specify 0, the media unmount occurs immediately upon completion of the requested operation. Values greater than 1800 are set to 1800.

GoalTape - How to Set Tape Media Unmount Delay on UNIX Servers. SolutionThere have been numerous questions concerning what the Media Unmount Delay should be when dealing with Oracle Tape Products. This is NOT an unload timer. It is not timing the unload of the drive. It is an intentional delay that kicks in when the job finishes before the host will issue an unload to the current tape on the drive. As such it is very site dependent. If you have jobs that call for a tape mount and then a couple of minutes later will call for the same tape to be mounted then you would want a longer time delay before the tape is unloaded from the drive. If you do not have this scenario then you want the tape unloaded soon so the drive can accept the next mount request in the queue. For most accounts the default of 2 minutes is plenty. The following information comes from Symantec Support Website: For the most current updates on this subject, refer to: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=home MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY bp.conf entry for UNIX serversArticle:000120356

There has been a myth propagated throughout the VERITAS NetBackup (tm) community that setting the MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY will have some effect on the timeout setting for a rewind to wait until the eject is issued. The truth is that NetBackup has no control over this process (rewinding and ejecting). If the drive does not go to a ready status sometime after the unmount has been requested, NetBackup will down the drive.
What is the Media Unmount Delay? What is the Media Unmount Delay?
The Media Unmount Delay is located in the media server host properties - media section. Specifying a Media Unmount Delay property indicates that media unload is delayed for the number of seconds indicated, after the requested operation is complete. Media Unmount Delay applies only to user operations, including backups and restore of database agent clients, such as those running VERITAS NetBackup (tm) for Oracle. The delay reduces unnecessary media unmounts and media positioning in cases where the media is requested again a short time later.
The delay can range from 0 to 1800 seconds. (Default is 180 seconds). If you specify 0, the media unmount occurs immediately upon completion of the requested operation. Values greater than 1800 are set to 1800.
