TIME ESTIMATE: 45 mins TASK COMPLEXITY: 1 FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS: PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Disk Failure/Fault WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement. WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?: Removing a Primary Hard Drive 1. Power off the system, remove the system cover, and attach an antistatic wrist strap 2. Remove the primary hard drive as follows: a. Disconnect the power cable connector and the CD-ROM drive cable connector b. Disconnect the hard drive cable connector and the power cable connector from c. Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the hard d. Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws securing the hard e. Remove the hard drive from the hard drive bracket. f. Place the hard drive on an antistatic mat. Replacing a Primary Hard Drive Note – Read the hard drive product guide for information about jumpers, switch Note – Prior to replacing a hard drive, verify that the drive’s back panel modeselect 1. Replace the primary hard drive as follows: a. Position the hard drive into the hard drive bracket. b. Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, replace the four screws securing the hard c. Position the hard drive and hard drive bracket into the chassis, ensuring that d. Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, replace the two screws securing the hard e. Connect the hard drive cable connector and the power cable connector to the Note – Verify that the cable connectors are oriented properly by aligning the f. Connect the power cable connector and the CD-ROM drive cable connector to Note – Verify that the cable connectors are oriented properly by aligning the 2. Detach the wrist strap, replace the system cover, and power on the system <OPTIONAL> Installing a Secondary Hard Drive The secondary 9.1 GByte hard drive option for the Ultra 5 system ships with a 1. Power off the system, remove the system cover, and attach an antistatic wrist strap. 2. Disconnect all cables from the rear of the diskette drive. 3. Loosen, but do not remove the three screws that hold the diskette drive bracket to 4. Remove the diskette drive bracket from the chassis by sliding it back and lifting 5. Remove any PCI card from PCI slot 2. 7. Disconnect the existing hard drive cable from the rear of the master hard drive 8. Place the new secondary hard drive into the secondary hard drive bracket and Note – Before installing the hard drive into the system, verify that the drive’s backpanel 9. Place the new hard drive bracket and hard drive on top of the power supply. 10. Connect the new hard drive cable’s “MOTHERBOARD” connector to 11. Connect the new hard drive cable’s “MASTER” connector to the EIDE connector 12. Connect the new hard drive cable’s “SLAVE” connector to the EIDE connector on Note – Verify that the cable connectors are oriented properly by aligning the Secondary hard drive (slave-device 1) ---- Primary hard drive (master-device 0) ---- Motherboard J15 (primary channel) 13. Place the three holes on the new hard drive bracket over the three securing screws 14. Carefully slide the hard drive bracket forward until it stops. 15. Tighten the three screws that secure the drive bracket to the chassis. 16. Dress cables to provide clearance. 17. Reinstall any PCI card you removed from PCI slot 2. OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: Boot system and verify functionality. Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
