Goal

Learn how to determine VMware ESX/ESXi version and build number in use, and VMware vCenter Server version.

Fix

Some background on how to tell VirtualCenter Server versions and ESX Server versions once installed. For VirtualCenter Server go to Help - About VMware Infrastructure. Note the Version and Build number for VMware VirtualCenter. VMware tracks versions by Build Numbers. For instance on VMware's download site you find for VirtualCenter Server:

VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-947939.iso   File size:3.4G   File type:         iso         Release Date:2012-12-20       Build Number:947939

For ESX 4.x versions to find Xsigo ESX 4.x host driver version and ESX 4.0 installed build ID use the 'esxupdate query' command in conjunction with the 'vmware -v' command:

[root@verari4 EVA LUN1]# esxupdate query -------------Bulletin ID------------- -----Installed----- ----------------Summary-----------------

XSIGO-4.1.0.260247.3.1.0-r5722.ESX4.1 2010-09-14T13:19:27 Xsigo Systems Virtual Driver + IB Bundle

The Xsigo 4.1.0 v3.1.0 driver is installed onto ESXi 4.1.  The command below shows the ESXi 4.1.0 build number.

[root@verari4 EVA LUN1]# vmware -v VMware ESX 4.1.0 build-260247

For ESXi 5.0 the 'vmware -v' command still works.
