When a data pool on a ZFS appliance is nearly full and LUNs are occupying a major piece of the data, it may be necessary to remove one of the LUNs in order to get control over the data again. The BUI/CLI of the appliance won't allow for any change or removal in such condition. This document describes how to remove a LUN under these circumstances.

Goal

Symptoms observed by the customer:

When trying to modify or remove LUN under (nearly) full pool conditions, customer sees following error in BUI or CLI:

san1:shares iSCSI/ISCSI-VM1> set nodestroy=false
                     nodestroy = false (uncommitted)
san1:shares iSCSI/ISCSI-VM1> commit
error: The action could not be completed because there is insufficient space
       available. This may be due to a quota being exceeded, or all available
       storage may be exhausted. Check the quotas of any projects or shares. If
       there is no quota, or the quota cannot be changed, then destroy any
       unused shares or snapshots to free up space and try again.
