FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: SPARC T5-2 Server, Power Supply Backplane (PS Backplane) failure
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
ESD Caution:
- Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
- Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
- Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat
DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.
NOTE: This is a cold service procedure that must be performed by qualified service personnel. The system must be completely powered down before performing this procedure.
CAUTION: Power is supplied to the PS backplane even when the server is powered off. To avoid personal injury or damage to the server, you must disconnect power cords before servicing the PS Backplane.
1. Prepare for servicing:
a. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
b. Power off the server and unplug power cords from the power supplies.
c. Extend the server to the maintenance position.
d. Remove the top cover.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:
Remove the Power Supply Backplane
1. Pull both power supplies at least part-way out of the chassis, to disconnect them from the PS backplane.
2. Remove all memory risers.
3. Remove the air divider by pulling it up and out of the chassis.
4. Remove the ribbon cable connecting the PS backplane to the motherboard.
5. Remove the screw that holds the PS backplane cover in place.
6. Remove the power supply cover (There are two slots on the PS backplane cover that you must guide around pins on the inside of the power supply cage):
a. Lift the cover up a little to clear the first part of the slots.
b. Push the cover a little towards the front of the chassis.
c. Push the tooth at the bottom of the cover to clear the edge of the power supply cage.
d. Lift the cover out of the chassis.
7. Remove the four bus bar screws that secure the motherboard to the PS backplane.
8. Disconnect the AC cables from PS Backplane (Tilt the PS backplane to access the cable connectors).
9. Lift the PS backplane out of the chassis.
Install the Power Supply Backplane
1. Unpack the replacement PS Backplane and place it on an antistatic mat.
2. Hold the PS Backplane at the end of the power supply cage at an angle and connect the AC cables to the AC connectors on the PS Backplane (Ensure that each AC cable is connected to the appropriate connector. You must connect he AC cable on the right to the AC connector on the right and the connect AC cable on the left to the AC connector on the left).
3. Insert the PS Backplane into position (Ensure that the tabs on the power board slide onto the hooks on the power supply cage).
4. Install the four bus bar screws to secure the mother board to the PS Backplane (Use a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver to tighten the bus bar screws until the Power Supply Backplane and the motherboard are securely fastened to the bus bars).
5. Replace the PS Backplane cover:
a. Align the PS Backplane cover (Ensure that the tooth at the bottom of the cover is clear of the power supply cage. There are two slots on the Power Supply Backplane cover that you must guide around pins on the inside of the power supply cage).
b. Fit the two slots on the cover around the two pins.
c. Lift up the cover a little to guide the two pins into the other part of the slots.
d. Attach the screw to fasten the PS Backplane cover in place.
6. Reconnect the ribbon cable from the motherboard to the PS Backplane.
7. Reinstall the air divider by sliding it into the chassis.
8. Reinstall the memory risers.
9. Push the power supplies all the way back into the chassis.
10. Return the server to operation:
a. Install the top cover.
b. Return the server to the normal rack position.
c. Reinstall the power cords to the power supplies and power on the server.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
Verify Power Supply Backplane Functionality
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
* If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear component faults.
* If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
