WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

Sun Fire 4800/6800,E4900/E6900 Product Knowledge, and General hardware replacement experience.

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:


PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Redundant Transfer Switch (RTS) Failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

Replacing the RTS Modules

1. For systems with redundant RTS modules, skip to Step 3.

2. For systems with non-redundant RTS modules, power off the system.

    Refer to the Sun Fire Midrange Systems Platform Administration Manual for complete procedures for powering off the system.

3. Power off the RTS module that is to be replaced

4. Power off the wall circuit breaker connected to the RTS module that is to be replaced.

5. Remove the power cord from the RTS module that is to be replaced.

6. Loosen the screw on the bottom of the RTS module.

7. Pull the module straight out.

8. Install the replacement unit by reversing Step 1 through Step 7.

Ensure proper engagement of the connector in the rear of the module when inserting

the replacement module into the RTU.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
