ESD Caution:
  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are  extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.

Contamination Caution:
  • Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: Mx-32 Product Training/Experience

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

HOT replacement

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : HOST containing the target HDDBP must be stopped.

Notes:
- The hard drive cage is a hot service component.  Chassis AC power does not need to be removed.  The HOST containing the target HDDBP must be stopped.
- Do not mix different generations of EMSs and hard drive cages in the same IOU.  See the Service Manual for all rules about hard drive cage compatability.
- If an IOU has first-generation hard drive cages, the LEDs on the drives stay lit when the host is stopped. If an IOU has second-generation hard drive cages, the LEDs on the drives turn off when the host is stopped.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Active Replacement:

1. Verify that the HOST which contains the target HDDBP is stopped (i.e., Powered Off)
-> show /HOST2 status

  /HOST2
    Properties:
        status = Powered Off

2. Note the order of the hard drives. They must be installed in the same order in the replacement cage.

3. Use a grounding strap to protect the equipment from ESD damage.

4. Remove all drives from the hard drive cage. See "M5-32 - How to Replace a Faulty Hard Disk Drive (HDD) (Doc ID 1519457.1)" for detailed instructions.

5. Unlock the captive T20 Torx screw at the bottom of the hard drive cage.

6. Pull out the Hard Drive Cage.

7. Unpack the replacement Hard Drive Cage from its ESD safe packaging.

8. Pack the faulty Hard Drive Cage into its ESD safe packaging.

9. Plug in the replacement Hard Drive Cage.

Caution: Do not forcibly push the Hard Drive Cage when inserting it.

10. Lock the captive T20 Torx screw.

11. Install the hard drives (in the same order as before. See "M5-32 - How to Replace a Faulty Hard Disk Drive (HDD) (Doc ID 1519457.1) " for detailed instructions.

12. Re-start HOST and confirm faults are cleared (i.e., "-> show faulty")

13. Prepare the faulted Hard Drive Cage  outside the datacenter for return to Oracle.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
