ESD Caution:
  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are  extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.

Contamination Caution:
  • Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: Mx-32 Product Training/Experience

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

HOT replacement

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : The HDD to replace should no longer be used by any domains

Customer should have prepared disk for replacement:

  • From the OS, cfgadm -a command to verify Ap_Id.
  • Stop the use of HDD by the application and disconnect the HDD from the OS.
  • This procedure varies depending on disk mirroring software and the setup of your Pdoms and Ldoms.
  • If you are not using disk mirroring software, use the "cfgadm -c unconfigure" command to disconnect the target from the OS.
  • If you are using disk mirroring software, see the manual of that software for how to disconnect the disk.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Active Replacement:

1. Locate the faulty HDD by running the ILOM commands "find faulty" or "show System/Open_Problems" .

2. Locate a faulty hard drive by its blue Ready-to-Remove LED.

3. Use a grounding strap to protect the equipment from ESD damage.

4. Press the release button on the disk carrier.

5. Swing the extraction lever to the horizontal position.

6. Pull the drive or filler panel out of the slot.

7. Unpack the replacement HDD from its ESD safe packaging.

8. Pack the faulty HDD into its ESD safe packaging.

9. Insert the HDD in the slot and close the extraction lever until it locks into place.

Caution: Do not forcibly push the HDD when inserting it.

10. Prepare the faulted HDD outside the datacenter for return to Oracle.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

Customer should now configure the HDD back into the system:

  • From the OS, cfgadm -x led=fault,mode=off
  • Configure the HDD into the OS.
  • The procedure of configuring the HDD into the OS varies depending on whether or not using the disk mirroring software or other supporting software and the setup of your Pdoms and Ldoms.
  • When you are not using such kind of software, you can use the "cfgadm -c configure" command to configure the target into the OS.
  • After configured, conduct the necessary operation such as format, as required.
  • When you are using the above software, see the manual of that software for how to configure the disk.

Note: Detailed ZFS instructions can be found in Document  1002753.1

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
