How to properly physically clean library.

SL8500 - Procedure to Manually Clean Copper Rails in Library:ATR:1457018.1:2 (Doc ID 1457018.1)

There is not any specific documentation about cleaning dust that has entered the library from the external environment.  Each case has to be examined individually, and customer may be billed if the work causes Oracle to face costs now and possibly in the future.

Some customers have engaged specialist cleaning companies to do this work, where they have suffered from a contamination from outside of the library due to recent building work.

External cooling air and the subsequent contamination is drawn through the front doors of the library by the fans at the back of the library in the drives and electronics module. The SL8500, its tape drives and expensive customer media should be in a clean computer room environment.  Refer to the Knowledge entry above.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Customers have paid Oracle to clean the library and this was accomplished with a good quality domestic vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter fitted as standard.  The use of a HEPA filter prevents the vacuum sucking up the air and contamination and then throwing it out the back of the vacuum cleaner back into the air as further air borne contamination.   HEPA is essential !

The entire library was vacuumed as much as possible with brush nozzle and straight nozzle which improved the situation. Cartridges were not removed from cells  but if very bad contamination (due to building plaster) was on the media, all cartridges would need to be removed and then all the arrays removed from site, washed and dried ! Robots and drives would need to be removed from library, vacuumed and “Air Dusted”.

Oracle could bill the customer for damaged drives.

For a general inspection and cleaning recommend the following:

Cartridge Array Targets - Verify there is no dust or debris obstructing the array targets. Five clearly defined bars should be visible per target. If any obstruction is noted clean with lint free cloth and use non-residue alcohol wipes if necessary.

Drive Bezel Targets - Verify there is no dust or debris obstructing the drive bezel targets; clean with a lint free cloth or non-residue alcohol wipe if necessary.

Frame ID Labels (SL3000 Only)- Verify no excessive build up of dust and debris; clean with a lint free cloth or non-residue alcohol wipe if necessary.

TallBot/HandBot - Verify there is no dust or obstruction to the scanner, proximity sensor, and optical sensors in the hand clam shell and clean with canned air if necessary.  Inspect the general Robotic Hand Assembly components and clean any areas with dust build up with canned air.

Copper Rails - Verify no excessive build up of dust and debris; clean with a non-residue alcohol wipe and lint free cloth if necessary.

Rail Extrusion - Verify no excessive build up of dust and debris; clean with a non-residue alcohol wipes if necessary.

Power Supply Fans in Base and DEM, Cartridge Arrays, Floors, Ceiling, and Side Cover - If excessive dust or debris is noted use a vacuum cleaner with a Hepa filter for general clean up.

Front Operator Panel - Verify no excessive build up of dust and debris and clean with a non-residue alcohol wipe and lint free cloth if necessary.

Drive Trays - If excessive dust and debris is noted remove drive tray and top cover; clean with canned air as appropriate.
