Goal
How to Change the Speed / Duplex Setting of a vNIC (across all types of OS)
Solution
vNICs inherit their speed / duplex setting from the IO-port they are terminated on, hence the following:
- vNICs terminated on a 1 Gbps IO-port will show vNIC speed as 1 Gbps.
- vNICs terminated on a 10 Gbps IO-port will show vNIC speed as 10 Gbps.
- PVI vNICs speed is determined by the FB (Fabric Board) of the Fabric Director it is terminated on (QDR = 40 Gbps, DDR = 20 Gbps, SDR = 10 Gbps)
In order to change the vNIC speed we need to edit the speed of the IO-port. The IO-port can be changed from the Fabric Director as follows:
- Log into the Fabric Director as ‘admin’
- Ensure that the IO-port has no vNICs terminated on it (if any – please move them away as seen further below in this KM Doc)
- Use the following command to change the IO port speed – (admin@chassis[xsigo] set ethernet-port <slot>/<port> -rate=?)
- This will NOT need a IO-card reboot.
- Move the vNICs back to this port (similar to the way they were moved away).
- All vNIC moved to this IO port with negotiate at the new speed.
How to select vNICs on an IO-port and change its termination point:
- Log into the Fabric Director as ‘admin’
- Select the IO-port / Ethernet-port you want to move the vNICs off.
- Run the following command to see the vNIC on this IO port (admin@chassis[xsigo] show ethernet-port <slot>/<port> vnics)
- Select each vNIC and move them off the IO-port (admin@chassis[xsigo] set vnic <vnic-name>.<serverprofile name> -if=none)
NOTE: Only in case of ESXi 5 – the vNIC speeds are hard-coded to 10Gbps - The true underlying speed would still remain that of the IO-port. This has been done to over-come other technical issues under the hood.
Xsigo / Oracle Support does not recommend changing the duplex settings on the IO-port – as a duplex miss-match (between IO-port and network switchport) can stop the link from coming up. Please contact Xsigo / Oracle Support for further questions.
