What is the meaning of the following kern.errors:

Nov 10 19:47:21 .... lw8: [ID 261355 kern.error] Fru ECC message: Databit Number invalid: 4 ,Databit Type: 2
Nov 10 19:47:21 .... lw8: [ID 261355 kern.error] Fru ECC message: Databit Number invalid: 4 ,Databit Type: 2

Seen once in /var/adm/messages.

None hardware is at fault, nor other hardware related errors can be found.

Solution

This messages refers to a portion of LW8 firmware code of the "IOSRAM mailbox" mechanism, which basically is a communication construct between Solaris and the firmware on LOM.

LOM is getting information from Solaris regarding ECC events, the LOM should record as well for eventual action.
ScApp on LOM is checking the IOBox on regularly basis and while these checks are occurring a validation error happened in the process of validating parameters of the received IOSRAM mailbox message.

In this case we got an error in the "Databit Number" with value of "4", which seems unexpected and therefore the "lw8" or "lom" ( depending on which side Solaris/LOM you see it ) occurred.

This is only a problem in this system if:

  • the 'showlogs -v' is examined, and we see an error is logged against a FRU
  • these messages would be seen more often and/or on a regular basis

Possible actions:

  • If you see an error is logged against any FRU in "showlogs -v", this may be investigated.
  • If it occures more than once, please reset the system controller first and if possible the Solaris instance as well.
  • If this kernel error has only seen only once, it can be ignored.
