How to replace a Fan in a Brocade 4900 Fiber Channel Switch

Solution

 DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: Field Engineer/Administrator will want to be familiar with Brocade Switches.
   TIME ESTIMATE: 2 minutes
   TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A fan has failed or is suspected faulty and needs replacement.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: Identify the Fan Assembly that needs replacement.  As viewed from the Non-Port side of the Director:

Fan Assembly #1 is on the right.
Fan Assembly #2 is in the middle.
Fan Assembly #3 is on the left.

Because the cooling system relies on pressurized air, do not leave any of the fan assembly slots empty longer than two minutes while the switch is operating. If a fan assembly fails, leave it in the switch until it can be replaced.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

1. Unscrew the captive screw on the fan assembly you are replacing using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
2. Remove the fan assembly you are replacing from the chassis by pulling the handle out, away from the chassis.

NOTE:  Wait at least 30 seconds after removal of old fan assembly before installing a new fan assembly. If you do not, the firmware monitoring the fan FRU can get out of sync and cause the status LED to flash between green and amber even though the replacement fan is operating correctly.

Install the new fan assembly in the chassis:

3. Orient the new fan assembly with the captive screw on the right.
4. Gently push the fan assembly into the chassis until it is firmly in.
5. Secure the fan assembly to the chassis by screwing in the captive screw using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Verify that the fan status LED is lit steady green to indicate normal operation.  If the LED is not a steady green, ensure that the fan assembly is securely installed and seated properly.

PARTS NOTE:  None
