How to replace a Power Supply in a Brocade 5000/5100 Fiber Channel Switch

Solution

 DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: Field Engineer/Administrator will want to be familiar with Brocade Switches.
   TIME ESTIMATE: 2 minutes
   TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A power supply has failed or is suspected faulty and needs replacement.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

There are two power supply/fan assembly units in the Brocade 5000/5100. They are hot-swappable and redundant, and capable of functioning universally without voltage jumpers or switches. The FRU units are identical and interchangeable.

The Brocade 5000/5100 fans are fixed inside the integrated power supply/fan FRU to provide necessary airflow to cool the whole system. There is one fan located in the rear section of each FRU. The system software sets fan speed and measures their speeds through the tachometer interface. The two power supply/fan assembly FRU units are hot-swappable if replaced one at a time. They are identical and fit into either slot.

Identify the power supply/fan assembly that needs replacing.  When viewing the switch from the port side:

- Power supply #1 is on the left
- Power supply #2 is on the right

Check the power supply status LED next to the I/O switch. If the power supply status LED is not on, verify that the power supply is on and seated and the power cord is connected to a functioning power source. If the light does not turn green, the power supply needs to be replaced.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

To replace a power supply/fan assembly unit in a Brocade 5000/5100 switch:

1. If the switch is to continue operating during the replacement, verify that the other power supply/fan assembly unit (the one not being replaced) has been powered on for at least four seconds and has a green LED.
2. If the power supply/fan assembly unit you are replacing is not already off, press the AC power switch to “O” to power it off. Refer to Figure 1 for the location of the AC power switch.
3. Lift the power cord retainer up to free the power cord for removal.
4. Unplug the power cord from the power supply/fan assembly unit that you are replacing.
5. Unscrew the captive screw on the power supply/fan assembly unit that you are replacing using the Phillips-head screwdriver.
6. Remove the power supply/fan assembly unit from the chassis by pulling the power cord retainer on the power supply/fan assembly unit out, away from the chassis.

Install the new power supply/fan assembly unit in the chassis:

NOTE: Do not force the installation. If the power supply does not slide in easily, ensure that it is correctly oriented before continuing.

7. Orient the power supply/fan assembly unit, with the captive screw on the right.
8. Gently push the power supply into the chassis until it is firmly in.
9. Secure the power supply/fan assembly unit to the chassis by screwing in the captive screw using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

10. Plug the power cord in to the power supply/fan assembly unit and press the AC power switch to “I”to turn it on.
11. Fasten the power cord in place by pulling the power cord retainer down over the power cord plug.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Verify that the LED on the new power supply/fan assembly unit displays a steady green light while the switch is operating. If the LED is not green, ensure that the power supply/fan assembly units firmly installed.
