This document shows an example of setting up the Autohome feature on a ZFS Storage Appliance (aka 7000) with Active Directory.
The ZFSSA Autohome feature allows home directories to automatically be created and mounted on a Windows client, when the user logs into their PC using their Active Directory credentials.
It frees administrators from having to create individual shares for every user.
This further allows you to use the snapshot feature of ZFSSA and allow end users to do their own 'self restores' from snapshots.

Goal

Setup Autohome directories for Active Directory users

Solution

  1.  Create a Share on the ZFS Storage appliance called "autohome" and make sure SMB is enabled.
    Sample Share
  2. Under SMB create an authome rule for all users
    rule sample
  3. Have your AD admin put the following in the Home folder section on the profile tab for every AD user you want to have a home directory auto mapped to the ZFSSA.
\\10.80.55.3\autohome\%username%    Swap out the IP address with a valid IP address or DNS name to your ZFSSA exporting the share defined in step 1 above. A good AD admin can easily automate/batch this process on a large number of users.
You will end up with this:
    AD Profile Sample
  4. When a user logs into any computer using his AD credentials he will see this drive mapped to the ZFSSA automatically.
    Mapped Autohome Directory

It is also possible to automate snapshots of these shares so that users can do self restores.  See this MOS note for more Information.
