Goal

Take the Time to Obtain a SnapShot.

Solution

We are not utilizing the Log Snapshot feature as often as we should.  Support is often asked to determine "what went wrong" and the primary tool for this work, a Log Snapshot, was not executed and saved.  Please, if working on any non-routine problem, take and save a Log Snapshot before booting the library or waiting too long past a failure and losing important data.  If your problem appears to require a reboot then a Snapshot is the only thing that will help determine why.  It takes a short time and goes a long way in determining what happened. It also provides engineering with important data to prevent problems in future code. New microcode and SLConsole have the ability to both execute and save a Log Snapshots from a remote SLConsole session.

Make sure every SL3000/SL85000 library has Service enabled via the "hwActivation serviceFeature enable" command in 6.0x SL8500 and 3.0 SL3000 and higher codes or with the "log snapshot license enable" command for SL8500 microcode versions from 4.13 to 4.7x.

Note: For SL3000 code 2.81 the service feature was controlled by SILKS.  That is no longer an option and you need to upgrade code if you want to be able enable Service and use Log Snapshot.
