FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

ID Board Failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

WHAT ACTION DOES ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Before you begin, be sure to have a terminal connected to the serial port of the

system controller and have the following information available (it will be used later in this procedure):

  • System serial number
  • Model number
  • MAC address (for domain A)
  • Host ID (for domain A)
  • Whether you have a Capacity on Demand system

You can find information on labels affixed to the system

In most cases, when only the ID board and centerplane are replaced, the original

System Controller board will be used. The above information was already cached by

the system controller and will be used to program the replacement ID board.

You
will be asked to confirm the above information.

1. Halt the Solaris operating environment in each domain and power down the entire system.

2. Attach a wrist strap or foot strap. Connect the ESD jack from the system to your wrist strap or foot strap. Place a grounded ESD mat close to the system.

3. Facing the rear of the system, remove IB8 I/O assembly from the system.

4. Reaching into the opening created by removing the I/O assembly, grasp the ID board by the edges and remove it from the centerplane

Now is possible to install the new ID Board

5. Reach into the opening created by removing the I/O assembly and connect the ID board to the connectors on the centerplane .

6. Install IB8 I/O assembly into the system

7. Power on the system.

8. Enter the system data information into the new ID board.

If you have a serial port connection, access the console for the system controller because the system will prompt you to confirm the board ID information

Example:

It appears that the ID Board has been replaced.

Please confirm the ID information:

(Model, System Serial Number, Mac Address Domain A, HostID Domain A, COD Status)

Sun Fire 4800, 45H353F, 08:00:20:d8:a7:dd, 80d8a7dd, non-COD

Is the information above correct? (yes/no):

9. Compare the information collected in at the beginning with the information you have been prompted with in the previous step.

If the information matches, answer yes to the above question on the system controller console. The system will boot normally.

If the information does not match, answer no to the above question on the system controller console.

10. If you answer no to the question in Step 6 or if you are replacing both the ID

board and the System Controller board at the same time, you will be prompted to enter the ID information manually.

Note – Enter this information carefully, as you have only one opportunity to do so.

Use the information collected in Step 1 to answer the questions prompted for.

Be aware that you must specify the MAC address and Host ID of domain A (not the SC).

Example:

Please enter System Serial Number: xxxxxxxx

Please enter the model number (3800/4800/4810/6800/E4900/E6900): xxx
MAC address for Domain A: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

Host ID for Domain A: xxxxxxxx

Is COD (Capacity on Demand) system ? (yes/no): xx
