Goal

This document assists with upgrading HP LTO drives using the HP LTT (Library Tape Tool).

Solution

How to Upgrade HP LTO drives (in Oracle Libraries, Desktop, Rackmount, etc) using HP LTT tool for Windows.

Download the LTT tool from the following KB: HP LTO - Where to Find and Download the HP LTO Library and Tape Test Diagnostic Tool (Doc ID 1014570.1)

The LTT application can be acquired from a L1 or L2 Tape Technical Support Center Representative.

HP LTO - How to install HP LTT on your server (Doc ID 2132934.1)

Note: Refer to the attached documents for further assistance on Code Upgrade Procedure.  The HP LTT 4.14 User's Guide covers Windows and other supported operating systems.

  1. Start the HP LTT diag Tool.

  2. The “Startup” screen should pop up.

  1. On the “Startup” screen select the “Hardware Scan”, “Saved/Manual Scan”, or “Skip Device Scan” options under the “Scan Mode” section and then either the “NT Miniport” or “Ethernet (LTO5 Only)” option in the “I/O Mode” section.

Note: If you have previously checked the “Skip this dialog in the future” box or you select to “Skip Device Scan” a scan will not be executed and thus will need to be done once the tool is up.

  1. Click the “Continue” button and the HP LTT tool will start.

  2. If the scan wasn’t done on startup then hit the “Scan” tab and then click on the “Re-scan” button.

  3. Once the scan is done the tool should go back to the “By Product” tab so that you can select the device that you want to upgrade the code on.

  4. Select the drive that you want to upgrade the code on and a quick inquiry is done on the drive and then all of the tabs at the top of the HP LTT tool should become available.

  1. Click on the “Firmware” tab at the top of the tool.

  2. The HP LTT tool will check to see if there are any firmware files in the HP LTT “firmware” directory and if none are found it will go straight to the “Load Firmware Files” screen.

  1. Browse to the folder where the HP LTO firmware is located and then click on the firmware file that is desired for the upgrade.

  2. Click on the “Update Firmware” tab.

  3. Verify the desired firmware is listed and then click on the “Start Update” button.

Note: The firmware update can take several minutes and HP LTT tool will be unresponsive while the upgrade is being processed.

  1. When the firmware update completes the HP LTT tool will automatically go to the “Firmware Update Results” tab where you can verify the firmware update completed.

  1. Verify the firmware update completed on the drive by clicking on the “Identity” tab up at the top of the HP LTT tool.

The screen should show that the drive now has the updated firmware version sent back in the inquiry data from the drive.
