DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES ENGINEER NEED:
Sun X86 Servers
Task Complexity: 2
TIME ESTIMATE: 120 minutes
WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
What Action Does the Engineer Need to Take:
1. Verify with customer system is available for power down.
2. Label all cables connected to the server and disconnect.
3. Remove the server from the rack
4. Prepare Antistatic Measures
5. Remove the top cover
Remove Faulty PDB Board
1. Remove power supplies
2. Remove Optical Media Drive
3. Remove all Hard Drives
4. Remove Media Bay Assembly
5. Disconnect the following cables from the media bay assembly
a. Disconnect the blue system fan tray assembly cable that connects to the PDB underneath the media bay assembly cables.
This step allows easier access to the media bay assembly cables.
b. Disconnect media bay assembly cable (top) that connects to the motherboard
c. Disconnect media bay assembly cable (bottom) that connects to the PDB
d. Disconnect media bay assembly ribbon cable that connects to the PDB
You can disconnect this cable from the rear of the media bay assembly or from the PDB after loosening the screws
and lifting the assembly out of the chassis.
6. Loosen two captive screws(labeled 2 and 3), and remove the noncaptive screw (labeled 1) closest to the front of the server.
7. Lift the media bay assembly out of the chassis
8. Disconnect and remove the ribbon cable from the PDB.
9. Set the media bay assembly aside on an antistatic mat.
10. Remove the ten(10) screws that secure the PDB board to the chassis
Install new PDB Board
1. Remove the replacement PDB from its packaging and place it on an antistatic mat.
2. Lower the PDB into the chassis, aligning the board’s holes with the standoffs in the chassis.
3. Install the screws firmly to secure the PDB to the chassis.
Installing the media bay assembly, the hard drives, the optical media drive, and the power supplies:
4. Installing the Media Bay Assembly
a. Install the media Bay back into the system.
b. Move the cables as far out of the way as possible.
c. If disconnected, reconnect the media bay assembly ribbon cable to the PDB.
Arrange the cable where it can be reconnected to the assembly after it is reseated.
5. Lower the media bay assembly into the chassis until it seats.
6. Tighten the media bay assembly screws
7. Connect the following cables to the media bay assembly
8. Install the optical media drive and the hard drives
9. Install Power Supplies
WHAT ACTION DOES CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. Boot up server.
2. Monitor and check messages file (if Solaris or Linux) under usual load by server to check for normal CPU temperatures and operation
3. Use fmadm/fmdump to clear previous faults affecting old system board.
4. Connect to BUI and eventually clear any remaining faulty component, if applicable to system board assembly, clear SEL log and reset SP
