PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Fan Failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : n/a

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE:

Single Fan Failures on LW8 Platforms

Special instructions:

For Fan 0,1,2,3,4 and 5 :

Hot-Swap the fan.

Some alarms will appear on the console but there will not be any impact to platform uptime.

Always have the replacement fan ready to be installed without delay.

For Fan 6 or 7 :

A failure of either of these fans will most likely result in a domain reboot within 9 minutes of the fan failure (to disable certain CPUs).

This behavior can vary depending on the measurement of the ambient temperature (showenvironment: ambient sensors are called 'Board').

The following CPUs will most likely be disabled as a result of the failure of Fan-6 or Fan-7 :

     SB0/P2

     SB2/P2

     SB4/P2

First check to see if "all" of the above CPUs have been disabled.

If, and only if, all of them have been disabled, go ahead and Hot-Swap the faulty fan (Fan 6 or 7).

Otherwise, use Cold-Swap (poweroff the domain).

Note that the disabled CPUs will need to be enabled again (setls, enablecomponent, setchs, whichever is appropriate).

For Multiple Fan Failures on LW8 Platforms

  Replace the Fan Tray

1a) If the system is a Sun Fire E2900 or v1280, REMOVE the left input air filter.

These systems are qualified to operate without this filter and Sun Alert 1021703.1 provides the basis for this action.

Please insert the comment "FILTER REMOVED" in the comments section of the ATR feedback for this action plan to validate this action was taken.

This system should also be operating at least ScApp 5.20.14 (Patch 114527-15); See Sun Alert 1021703.1 for justification.

1b) If system is a Netra 1280 or 1290, the customer is required to order and replace left input air filter as soon as possible (PN X6806A-Z).

This system is not qualified to operate without filter and filter should be cleaned and/or replaced every 3-6 months.

Sun Alert 1021703.1 provides the basis for this action.

Purchase of this part is customer's responsibility and filters should be inspected and cleaned or replaced as

necessary every 3-6 months by the customer as documented in Periodic Maintenance instructions in the

Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Systems Service Manual (pdf) and the Netra 1290 Server Service Manual (pdf) section C-1.

The Sun Fire E2900/V1280 and Netra 1280 Systems Filter Installation Guide (pdf) provides instructions for how to replace

filter (and replacement should be performed by customer).

System should also be operating at least ScApp 5.20.14 (Patch 114527-15); See Sun Alert 1021703.1 for justification.

2.  Open the front doors to the system.

3.  Attach the wrist strap.

4.  Identify the fan that is faulty and needs to be replaced.

The fault LED on the panel between the two columns of fans should be lit.

5.  Identify the fan’s power connector and captive retaining screw.

6.  Disconnect the power connector

7.  Loosen the appropriate captive screw that secures the fan

8.  Remove the fan and place on an ESD mat

9.  Orient the NEW fan so that the two lugs on the metal carrier engage in the cutouts in the fan tray

10. Tighten the captive screw to secure the fan

11. Replace the power connector to the fan

If the system is powered on, the fault LED will not be lit.

Note – If a fan failed and the system has shut down to Standby, the fault LED will not be extinguished until you power on the system.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: n/a
