 Sun Ultra 25/Ultra 45 Workstation - How to Remove and Replace a Sun Ultra 25 Workstation NVRAM

Solution

   WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

Sun Ultra 25/Ultra 45 Workstation product training is desirable but not required.

   TIME ESTIMATE: 45 mins

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
   PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Faulty NVRAM

   WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

   WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Replacing the NVRAM (nonvolatile random access memory)

Note - If you are replacing a motherboard and you have software that is licensed to the HostID or Ethernet address, you should install the old NVRAM on the new motherboard.

Removing the NVRAM

1. Power off the system and attach an antistatic wrist strap. Open and position the chassis, and remove the access panel.

2. Locate the NVRAM on the Motherboard

3. Pull the NVRAM straight up from the motherboard connector

4. Set the NVRAM aside on an antistatic mat.

Note – NVRAM and the NVRAM connector are keyed.

Installing the NVRAM

The NVRAM installs directly onto the motherboard. There are no additional fasteners or cables.

1. Power off the system and attach an antistatic wrist strap. Open and position the chassis, and remove the access panel.

2. Align the NVRAM key to the NVRAM connector key on the motherboard.

Note – NVRAM and the NVRAM connector are keyed.

3. Press the NVRAM down into the connector.

4. Ensure that the NVRAM is tight in its connector.

5. If you are finished working, reassemble the workstation, power on the workstation, and verify the NVRAM installation.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
   WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
