 Sun Fire V250 - How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V250 System Board (incl: CPU)

 DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
   WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

Sun Fire V250 product training is desirable but not required

   TIME ESTIMATE: 60 mins

   TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
   PROBLEM OVERVIEW: System Board, CPU, or associated component failure

   WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

  WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

System Board Assembly

The CPU and system board is replaced as a single assembly.

To Remove The System Board

1. Power off the server.

2. Place the system on its side.

3. Ensure the server is properly grounded.

4. Remove the service panel.

5. Disconnect all power and data cables from the system board.


 - SCSI cable to SCSI backplane
 - Data cable to SCSI backplane
 - IDE cable to DVD drive
 - Power connectors to power distribution board

6. If any PCI cards are fitted, remove them, and place on an anti-static surface or bag. (Please note which PCI cards belong to which PCI slot)

7. Remove the PCI long card holder.

8. Remove the ALOM card and place it on an antistatic surface or mat.

9. Remove the fan module.

10. Remove the DIMMS and place on an anti-static surface or bag.

11. Loosen the system board retaining screw.

The system board is on a spring-loaded assembly which moves the board away from the back of the server when the retaining screw is loosened.

12. Slide the system board release lever towards the front of the server to release the system board.

13. Holding the system board by the plastic grab-handles, lift it out of the chassis.

To Install The System Board

1. Holding the system board by the plastic grab-handles, insert into the chassis.

2. Slide the system board release lever towards the rear of the server.

3. Tighten the system board retaining screw.

4. Install memory dimms

5. Install Alom Card

6. Install PCI long card holder

7. Install PCI cards

8. Connect all power and data cables to the system board.

 - SCSI cable to SCSI backplane
 - Data cable to SCSI backplane
 - IDE cable to DVD drive
 - Power connectors to power distribution board

9. Replace  the service panel.


OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
   WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
