 Sun Fire V250 - How to Remove and Replace Sun Fire V250 Disk Drive

Solution

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
   PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Faulty Hard Disk Drive


   WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement.
e.g. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc.
A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk. If a data backup is not required it is still a wise precaution.

   WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:

Removing a Hard Drive

If you are removing a hard drive while the operating system is still running, you must remove the drive logically from the operating system before physically removing it from the server.

Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

1. Determine the hard drive that you intend to remove.

eg:  # cfgadm -la

2. Unconfigure the hard drive that you intend to remove.

eg: # cfgadm -c unconfigure c1::dsk/c1t1d0

3. Verify that the device is now unconfigured.

eg: # cfgadm -la

4. Confirm that the hard drive you want to remove from the server is no longer visible to the operating system.

eg: # format

5. Ensure you are properly grounded.

6. Unlock and open the front door.

7. Check that the blue “OK to Remove” indicator is lit on the hard disk drive you are going to remove.

8. Make a note of the hard disk drive bay identification number.
 - You must put the replacement hard disk drive back into the same bay

9. Slide the catch at the front of the hard disk drive to the right.
 - This releases the handle on the front of the hard disk drive.

10. Pull the hard disk drive by its handle to remove it from the server.

11. Place the hard disk drive on an antistatic bag or mat.


Installing a Hard Drive


1. Ensure you are properly grounded.

2. Unlock and open the door.

3. Slide the catch on the front of the hard disk to the right.
 - This releases the handle on the front of the hard disk drive. The lever must be open before you insert the hard disk drive into the server. If it is not, the hard disk drive will not engage with the server correctly.

4. Make sure you are replacing the hard disk drive into the correct bay.
 - Refer to the note you took when you removed the hard disk drive.

5. Align the hard disk drive with the visual guides printed on both sides of each hard disk drive bay.

6. Slide the hard disk drive into the server body, until the metal lever starts to close.
 - This indicates that the hard disk drive has engaged with its connector in the server.

7. Push the handle so that the disk drive clicks into place.

8. Close the door and lock it.

If you are installing a hard drive in a server that is powered off, the server recognizes the new hard drive once it has completely booted up.
If you are installing a hard drive in a server that is powered on, continue with these procedures so that your server recognizes the new hard drive.

9. Configure the newly installed hard drive.

eg: # cfgadm -la

eg: # cfgadm -c configure c1::dsk/c1t1d0

10. Confirm that the drive is now connected and configured.

eg: # cfgadm -la

eg: # format



OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
   WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other.
