Goal

SL8500/SL3000 - Cleaning Requirements on Rails

Are there any documents about the frequency to clean the rails on SL8500/SL3000 or is it a must during a preventive maintenance?

Solution

Periodic cleaning of the rails in the SL3000 and SL8500 is neither required nor recommended.  That is why it is not documented in the service manuals. Loose black graphite dust and longitudinal scuff marks on the power strips are normal and do not affect the operation of the library.

There is a very small percentage of customers that can experience excessive upper brush wear on bots due to a buildup of debris in the copper strip splices. These customers would require cleaning of the strips and installation of the sweeper engineering change.

Refer to KB SL8500 - Procedure to Manually Clean Copper Rails in Library:ATR:1457018.1:2 (Doc ID 1457018.1) for further information.
