 DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: Hardware knowledge of the SL8500 library.

   TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

   TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:  It has been determined that the CAP CArtridge Access Port is no longer functioning properly.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: CAP needs to be offline to the host and library.  Service Safety door needs to be engaged.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Refer to the SL8500 Service Manual for complete instructions for the removal/replacement of the Cartridge Access Port.  This includes pictures and any warnings.

Note: Damage to the replacement CAP can be done if the following KB is not followed.

SL8500 CAP Assembly Gears Will Strip if a Reboot Before Initialization is Not Done When Replacing an Original Style CAP Assembly With a New Style CAP (Doc ID 1019502.1)

CAP Assembly: Removal

1. Open the library right front door.

2. Remove the 2 T25 screws at the bottom of the CAP assembly.

3. Disconnect the in-line connectors.

    - CAP A: J748/P74x and J792/P75x.

    - CAP B: J747/P74x and J756/P75x.

4. Remove the 2 T25 screws securing the top of CAP assembly.

5. Lift the CAP assembly up and off the door bottom ledge, removing it from the library door.

CAP Assembly: Replacement

1. Be sure the replacement CAP's upper bracket matches the CAP position (A or B). Verify with the removed CAP assembly.

2. Relocate the upper mounting bracket if required:

   a. Remove 3 T25 screws that secure the bracket and remove the bracket.

   b. Remove the knurled limit pin for CAP A or the pin is inserted for CAP B.

NOTE: The CAP assembly FRU ships in the unlocked (open position).  Do not move it until told to do so in these instructions.

3. Position the replacement CAP assembly onto the door bottom ledge.

4. Position 2 T25 screws into the upper mounting bracket.

5. Tread, but DO NOT tighten 2 screws to the top of the CAP.

6. Connect the in-line connectors:

    - CAP A: J748/P74x and J792/P75x.

    - CAP B: J747/P74x and J756/P75x.

7. Position 2 T25 screws into the bottom bracket.

8. Thread, but DO NOT tighten the 2 screws.

9. Tighten all 4 screws evenly to secure the CAP assembly.

10. Close the library door.

11. Perform "CAP Assembly Verification" as described on page 214 of the Service Manual.

NOTE:

If the CAP operates properly, continue with the next step.  If the CAP does not turn, or does not turn to its fully open and locked position, repeat steps 1 through 7, placing one 0.508 mm (0.020 in) shim (part # 3148106xx) from the CAP installation kit behind the top and bottom brackets.  A maximum of 5 shims may be installed under the top and bottom brackets.  If the CAP still does not operate properly after installing the fifth shim, you must order a new CAP.

12. Transfer all cartridge arrays from the removed CAP to the replacement CAP.
