Goal

This document will assist the user in confirming a BBU Battery failure on an internal 8-Port StorageTek SAS RAID HBA Card (aka Cougar Card)

Solution

If the battery backup unit (BBU) has been installed on the internal Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA, the below battery warning may be reported by the StorageTek RAID Manager Agent:

    Event Description: The battery has exceeded normal operating temperature: controller 1.
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: storage@<host.name>
    Date: MM/DD/YYYY
` Time: xx:xx:x xx MDT

Another common system message is as follows:

Mar 7 00:25:54 myServer Sun StorageTek RAID Manager Agent: [ID 654321 daemon.crit] [203] The battery-backup cache device needs a new battery: controller 1.

Please Note: There is a known temperature issue, prior to firmware 7.2.2.b, which may cause the battery to discharge. Please make sure the system is running firmware 7.2.2.b or higher.

The battery failure can be confirmed using the below arcconf CLI command from the OS:

    /opt/StorMan/arcconf getconfig 1 ad

Example:

   Status                                   : Failed

The replacement battery is listed in the Sun Systems Handbook under Option# SGXPCIESAS-R-INT-Z Lithium Ion Battery Module
