Goal

How to Recover a Stranded or Stuck Tape Out of a Tape Drive in the StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library.

How to manually remove a stuck tape from half height HP LTO and IBM LTO tape drives.

Solution

Before any physical intervention is attempted to remove a stuck tape, the following procedure should be followed to attempt to dismount the tape.

Attempt to dismount the cartridge From the Web GUI of the SL150 Library:

1. Log into the Web GUI as an admin user

Note: A move cannot be done from the Web GUI of the SL150 library while it is in an online state.

2. Put the SL150 library into an offline state

    a. Click on Library is Online in the upper right corner of the page.  This will show a drop down box.

    b. Click on Set Library Offline from the drop down box.  A window will pop up for confirmation.

    c. Click on OK.  The SL150 library should now be in an offline state.

3. Click on the drive that has the stranded tape in it.  A drop down box will show up.

4. Click on Move Tape.  A section will appear at the top of the page asking for a source and a destination address.  The source address should already be filled out with the address of the drive that was selected.

Note: If you have a partitioned library you can only move tapes between drives and slots that are in the same partition.

5. Click on any empty slot in the SL150 library.  This will populate the destination address with the slot that was selected.

Note: You can manually enter the destination address by selecting the slot address from the destination drop down.

6. Click on OK.  This will start the move of the tape from the drive to the slot and can take a while to complete.  Once the move completes you will get a message stating that the move completed.

Note: If this move fails the tape was not logically stranded but is most likely stuck in the drive and will require additional assistance from Oracle support to recover it from the drive.

7. Click on Close on the right side of the move complete message.

8. Put the SL150 library back into an online state.

   a. Click on Library is Offline in the upper right corner of the page.  This will show a drop down box.

   b. Click on Set Library Online from the drop down box.  A window will pop up for confirmation.

   c. Click on OK.

If the move completed successfully you should now have the stranded tape out of the drive and into a slot in the SL150 library.  You will now need to sync the backup application back up with the library by doing an inventory.

How to manually remove stuck tape cartridge from the drive:

Should the above process not work on removing the tape cartridge from the drive, refer to the following HP Knowledge Document to physically remove the tape cartridge.
