Fix

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: IB Fan Failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : n/a

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE:

IB fan0 and IB fan1 are located at the top of the system. Each IB fan has one LED,
fault LED ( ). The LED is lit when there is a fault. It is off when there is no fault.

1a) If the system is a Sun Fire E2900 or v1280, REMOVE the left input air filter.

  • These systems are qualified to operate without this filter and Sun Alert 1021703.1 provides the basis for this action.
  • Please insert the comment "FILTER REMOVED" in the comments section of the ATR feedback for this action plan to validate this action was taken.
  • This system should also be operating at least ScApp 5.20.14 (Patch 114527-15); See Sun Alert 1021703.1 for justification.

1b) If system is a Netra 1280 or 1290, the customer is required to order and replace left input air filter as soon as possible (PN X6806A-Z).

2. Extend and lock the system cabinet stabilizer bar.

Caution – Failure to extend and lock the stabilizer bar before you slide a system out
of the rack will cause the system cabinet to tip over.

3. Slide the system out of the system cabinet until the locking latches click.

4. Attach a wrist strap or foot strap. Place a grounded ESD mat close to the system.

5. At the top of the system, open the IB fan cover.
      a. Loosen the latch screw.
      b. Unlatch the cover and open it

6. Identify the fan to be removed. Disconnect the power connector

Caution – Wait at least ten seconds before removing the fan to allow it to stop
rotating. The remaining fan will still be rotating. There are no finger guards. Take care not to touch any part of the fan.
Caution – Do not operate the system for an extended time period with fan
removed. Doing so may cause overheating and system shutdown.

7. From the right side of the system, lift the fan out of the chassis using the metal loop

8. Lower the fan into the chassis using the metal loop

9. Connect the power connector to the fan

Caution – If the system is powered on, the fan will start as soon as the connector is inserted.

10. Close and latch the IB fan cover.

11. Remove the wrist strap.

12. Slide the system back into the chassis and secure it.

13. Retract the system cabinet stabilization bar.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: n/a
