Goal

Replacement of 3-Com Switch with PUE.

Solution

Due to a higher than predicted failure rate of the internal 3-Com network switch, we are suggesting that these switches eventually be replaced. If a subsystem is going to be offline for some other maintenance activity, you may take that opportunity to replace the 3-Com with a PUE (PN 7025036) switch. Disrupting a customer's operation for the sole purpose of replacing the switch is unnecessary and not recommended.  If a 3-Com switch is present in an SL8500 that will be receiving the RE feature, take that opportunity to order a replacement switch to be installed during the RE upgrade.  Future RE kits will include 2 PUE modules.

Update 20-Dec-2013:

PUE Switch Stocking and Proactive 3Com Replacement - UPDATE - The proactive replacements of 3-Com internal switches can resume.  The logistics supply issue is resolved and the PUE switches are now readily available.  Please use the original guidelines from 6/8/2012 shown below when replacing a 3Com switch that is still functioning:

Update…………Jan-6-20014

Due to a higher than expected failure rate of the internal 3-Com network switch and ILC switch support recommends these switches be proactively replaced. If a subsystem is going to be offline for some other maintenance activity, you should take that opportunity to replace the 3-Com with the PUE switch.

Disrupting a customer's operation for the sole purpose of replacing the switch is unnecessary and not recommended.  If a 3-Com switch is present in an SL8500 that will be receiving the RE feature, take that opportunity to order a replacement switch to be installed during the RE upgrade if an additional PUE switch was not ordered for the RE upgrade which is optional.

UPDATED due to PN Information - PUE Switch Stocking and Proactive 3Com Replacement - The proactive replacements of 3-Com internal switches can resume.  The logistics supply issue is resolved and the PUE switches are now readily available.  Please use the original guidelines from 6/8/2012 shown below when replacing a 3Com switch that is still functioning:

Update................Dec-3-2014

Suspension of Proactive 3COM Switch Replacements - Due to some supplier issues, the proactive replacement of 3COM internal switches is being temporarily suspended. Only replace failed switches at this time. You will be notified when you can resume proactive replacements.

Update - At this time there are 3 part numbers in use for the PUE switches. Please use the matrix below to determine which part to order.  In North America please order the 419951602 until supplies are exhausted.  All switches are functionally equivalent.

The PUE part numbers as of 01/06/2014

  • 419951602 is the original release and is functionally equivalent to all existing PUE switch assemblies. But it is not 2013 RoHS compliant and cannot be installed in EAME for SL8500’s installed in 2013 or later.
  • Order PN 419951602 until the current spares are used up unless for sites in EAME with 2013 or later installation dates.
  • 7056351 is functionally equivalent to all existing PUE switch assemblies and is RoHS 2013 compliant, can be used at all sites. Order this switch if needed for RoHS or if 419951602 is unavailable.
  • 7075107 is functionally equivalent to all existing PUE switch assemblies and is RoHS 2013 compliant, can be used at all sites. This part number should be ordered if PN_7056351 is not available.
