Goal

This document will assist with removing a stuck / jammed cartridge from an HP LTO tape drive.

Solution

1.Attempt to unload/eject from the software application.
2.Shut down the software.
3.Wait for the drive to complete any operation in progress — Ready LED is solid green.
4.Press the eject button again.
5.Attempt the Tape Stuck test in L&TT. This test can overcome many non-physical causes of a stuck tape in stand-alone drives. Check the results when the test is complete for additional information and suggestions.
6.Attempt a force eject:
  • Press and hold the eject button for 10 seconds.
  • The force eject operation could take several minutes and it should not be interrupted.

Inspect the cartridge for damage and discard it if any is found.

CAUTION: If the drive was in the middle of a backup when the force eject was initiated, then that backup data might be lost.
